For the past several years, a pair of adult bald eagles have nested and successfully hatched several young in the trees near Curtner Elementary School in Milpitas. This year, two young bald eagles hatched and in early July were beginning to fly.
On July 13, 2019, the Milpitas Police Department responded to the 700-block of North Abbott Avenue for a report of a deceased animal and the responding officer located a deceased young bald eagle on the ground beneath several power lines. A California Department of Fish and Wildlife Warden responded to the location and transported the bald eagle to their Wildlife Investigation Lab for further investigation. A necropsy was subsequently performed by Wildlife Investigation Lab staff, which revealed the bald eagle had been electrocuted when it came into contact with high voltage power lines in the area. Prior to the incident, the bald eagle was in good nutritional health and did not have any other injuries.
The Milpitas Police Department would like to thank the California Department of Fish and Wildlife for their response and diligent investigation into this unfortunate incident.
