MEDIA RELEASE: Changes to Highway 51 in Beloit Township after Construction Designed to Slow Traffic
Contact Person: Captain Jude Maurer 608-757-7944
August 9, 2019
Recently, Highway 51 (Riverside Drive) between Beloit-Rock Townline Road and County Highway Q was resurfaced and some changes were made in order to make travel on the highway safer. A traffic study recommendation was made to slow traffic on Highway 51 to help prevent vehicle crashes. Prior to resurfacing, Highway 51 was a four lane highway with two northbound and two southbound lanes. Now, Highway 51 will have one lane in each direction divided by a turn lane in the middle of the road. The turn lane is not a passing lane and using the turn lane as a passing lane is illegal.
The speed limit on Highway 51 north of County Highway Q is 40 miles per hour and gradually increases to 55 miles per hour north of East Philhower Road. Deputies and Town of Beloit Police officers will monitor traffic on Highway 51 for safety and traffic law compliance purposes.
