Los Altos Police Officer in stable condition after exposure to fentanyl 
At approximately 9:24 a.m. on Monday, August 12, 2019, three Los Altos Police Officers came into contact with a substance suspected to be fentanyl while processing evidence.
Santa Clara County Fire Department responded to the scene and EMS personnel determined all three officers were asymptomatic of exposure to fentanyl. However, one officer was feeling ill and was transported to a local hospital out of an abundance of caution. That officer remains at the hospital currently and is in stable condition.
A test of the substance confirmed it was in fact fentanyl, a strong, synthetic narcotic that is estimated to be 80-100 times stronger than morphine. Exposure to even minute amounts of fentanyl can lead to serious health effects such as slowed respirations, reduced blood pressure and loss of consciousness. Hazmat teams have quarantined the area and are working on remediation now.
