Fraud Location: 300 Block of Winchester Boulevard

An officer was dispatched to the 300 block of Winchester Boulevard on the report of fraud.

An elderly resident suffering from Alzheimer's Disease received approximately 40 phone calls from an unknown subject claiming to be an agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation acting on behalf of Publisher's Clearing House. The subject told the victim he had won $8,500,000, a new Mercedes and a new house. The subject requested $1,950 in delivery fees for the winnings. The victim wired the funds to the subject via a Walmart to Walmart money transfer. The subject is unknown and outstanding. SCPD advised the victim’s family to block the subject’s phone number.

On 8/5/19 the victim’s family advised SCPD the subject attempted to reach the victim an additional 34 times for $10,000 in taxes to cover the winnings. This case is on-going.

Drugs - Under the Influence Location: 900 Block of Wood Duck Avenue

Public Safety Dispatchers received calls from multiple reporting party’s regarding a male subject causing a disturbance on the 900 block of Wood Duck Avenue. The callers reported hearing yelling and screaming in the neighborhood, but could not pinpoint the subject’s location.

Multiple officers responded and walked through the neighborhood attempting to locate the subject. Upon contact, the subject was agitated, refused lawful commands and charged at an officer while screaming incoherently. A police K-9 was deployed and he was quickly taken into custody. The subject displayed objective symptoms of being under the influence of a controlled substance.

The Santa Clara Fire Department was requested to evaluate the subject and transport him to a local hospital. He was later transferred to the Santa Clara County Jail where he admitted to ingesting LSD earlier in the evening.

Traffic Accident - Minor Injury Location: San Tomas Expressway at Saratoga Avenue

A traffic accident occurred on San Tomas Expressway at Saratoga Avenue.

One of the parties involved in the accident was trapped in their vehicle. Firefighters extricated the victim. Northbound San Tomas Expressway was closed while this procedure was safely being performed and the accident scene was cleared.

The male driver at fault for the crash had minor injuries to his legs and feet.

Brandishing Location: 2800 Block of Augustine Drive

Officers were dispatched to a report of a suspect brandishing a weapon on the 2800 block of Augustine Drive.

On arrival, officers met with both involved parties. Through investigation, officers learned the subjects got in an argument over taking too long to order food in the drive-through. The female suspect exited the vehicle and brandished an ax at the victim. The victim did not want prosecution. The suspect's ax was seized and a report was taken.

Three of the events were held in public venues - on the grounds of the Triton Museum of Art, Live Oak Park and Fairway Glen Park. In total, approximately 2,500 citizens participated in this Police Department sponsored event, as did the Santa Clara Fire Department, Santa Clara Unified School District School Board, City Manager and members of the Santa Clara City Council.

Vandalism - Felony Location: 2200 Block of Pasetta Drive

Officers were dispatched to the 2200 block of Pasetta Drive on the report of a group of males fighting.

Through investigation, it was discovered three male subjects struck and shattered the rear window of a vehicle with a crow bar. The males had gotten into an argument with the victim earlier in the evening.

Two suspects were contacted. One suspect displayed objective symptoms of being under the influence of a controlled substance. The suspects were arrested and transported to the Santa Clara County Jail.

Theft from a Vehicle Location: 1300 Block of Hope Drive

Sometime between 2000 hours on 8/7/19 and 0430 hours on 8/8/19 hours, unknown subject(s) shattered the front passenger window of a vehicle on the 1300 block of Hope Drive. The unknown suspect(s) reached into a compartment in the vehicle and stole the victim's wallet which contained a driver’s license, various credit / debit cards and approximately $150 in cash. Damage to the vehicle is estimated at over $400. The subject(s) remain at large.

Robbery Location: 2800 Block of El Camino Real

An officer responded to the 2800 block of El Camino Real on the report of a robbery.

A victim was approached by a male suspect outside of a business. The suspect offered a Rolex watch to the victim as collateral, if he could borrow $4,000. The suspect drove the victim to a local bank to withdraw the money.

Upon return to the initial meeting location, the suspect grabbed the envelope with the victim’s money and fled the scene. The suspect is unknown and remains at large.

NOTE: In an effort to reduce collisions and injuries as well as provide education through enforcement, the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety in partnership with Santa Clara Police Department, Milpitas Police Department, City of Los Altos Police Department, Gilroy Police Department, Morgan Hill Police Department, Mountain View Police Department, California Highway Patrol, and the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office, conducted high visibility, directed traffic enforcement operations county-wide from August 3 through August 9, 2019.

The enforcement was focused on distracted driving violations, but all moving and non-moving violations may be enforced as applicable. Each agency participating provided 1-2 motor officers for the campaign. This campaign is in honor of California Highway Patrol Officer Kirk Griess, who faithfully served the people of California as a CHP Officer for 19 years before being killed in the line of duty by a distracted driver on August 10, 2018, as well as the 9 lives lost each day in the United States because of distracted driving.

Funding for this campaign is provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety.

Petty Theft Location: 2000 Block of El Camino Real

An officer responded to a call for service on the 2000 block of El Camino Real.

A Loss Prevention Specialist had detained a subject for shoplifting. The subject selected a backpack, took the tags off and concealed several items inside. The subject paid for a handful of items but made no attempt to pay for the backpack or concealed items. He was detained, SCPD was contacted and he was arrested.

NOTE: SCPD’s K-9 Unit attended the Sean M. Walsh Foundation Luau. At the event, Police Chief Sellers presented Cheryl Walsh with a plaque thanking her for the on-going support.

Specialist Walsh was a Military Police Soldier in the California National Guard, serving in Operation Enduring Freedom, when he was killed in action in the Khost Province of Afghanistan on November 16, 2011. Prior to his service, Sean was a Santa Clara Police Explorer. His ultimate goal was to become a police officer, and canine handler, with our agency.

Since Sean’s passing, the Sean M. Walsh Foundation has purchased 26 dogs and assisted 7 Departments with equipment purchases. The Santa Clara Police Department has been the recipient of 5 dogs from the Foundation. For more information, log into https://www.seansk9s.org/
