Keeping Youth and the Community Safe; SCV Sheriff's COBRA Unit Arrest 3

The Cobra Unit (Gang and Juvenile Crime Team) at Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station not only investigates juvenile-related crimes and gang activity, but also proactively patrols to get a step ahead of crime and send a message to potential offenders that 'we’re watching.'

Area junior high and high schools in Santa Clarita Valley resumed classes on Tuesday. Focusing on youth, COBRA detectives along with a Los Angeles County probation officer conducted a target-specific juvenile criminal suppression detail on Monday, August 12. The mission included identifying juveniles involved and/or associated with gangs and holding them accountable for any engagement in criminal activity, as well as identifying adults who are possibly preying on children and encouraging their criminal behavior.

During the enforcement, COBRA detectives patrolled through a business complex parking lot on the 24800 block of Railroad Avenue, Newhall and made contact with three individuals suspected to be gang members - two male juveniles, accompanied by a male adult. Detectives located gang graffiti and a loaded firearm in the vicinity next to the two juveniles. After further investigation, evidence led to the detainment of the two juveniles on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm. The male adult in the company of the juveniles was arrested for parole violation.

More proactive patrol deployments, such as this operation, are planned by the COBRA team in the near future.

As a community member, there are steps that you can take to help us. Please continue to keep an eye out for any suspicious activity, and report it to our station. If you see suspected gang activity in your neighborhood, you can call our station at 661-255-1121 and request a patrol check.

Anonymous tips about suspected gang members in your neighborhood can also be submitted through www.LACrimeStoppers.org or by calling 1-800-222-8477. All tips are reviewed and disseminated to one of Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s specialized teams.

** Please note that if a crime is in progress, or you need an immediate deputy response, call 911 for emergencies or our non-emergency line at 661-255-1121. **

Gangs are a growing concern in every community, and there are steps as a parent that you can take to discourage the gang culture in our youth today, and put a stop to gang crime and violence:

- Meet your children's friends. Find out who they are, and how they and your children spend their free time.

- Help occupy our children's free time. Give them responsibilities at home. Encourage them to be involved in after-school sports or city recreational activities.

- Develop good communication and spend time with your children.

-Don’t allow your children to stay out late or spend a lot of unsupervised time on the streets.

Our deputies and detectives are dedicated to keeping your neighborhood safe, and with your help and continued partnership, we can create even stronger, safer communities for your families, and ours.
