Location: San Dimas High School, 800 Covina Boulevard, San Dimas, CA 91773
 
At about 9:38 a.m. today the San Dimas Sheriff’s Station received information via a transferred 9-1-1 call of a “person with a gun” at San Dimas High School.
 
We have confirmed to a satisfactory level that the call was a hoax, and that the call came from a student. The student responsible for the hoax call was detained and taken into custody. We are grateful for the quick work of school staff and deputy sheriffs to keep our students safe.
 
The investigation will be ongoing to gather evidence to bring the incident to a logical conclusion. We are prohibited by law from identifying juveniles arrested or detained, so we will be unable to do so in this case.
 
Thank you to all the parents and students who handled this situation with calm cooperation. The teamwork we saw today was refreshing. Let’s continue to have a safe, productive school year!

Dear Bonita Unified Community,
 
This morning the California Highway Patrol received a phone call claiming there was a man on the basketball courts with a gun at San Dimas High School (SDHS).  The San Dimas Sheriff’s Department quickly called for a lockdown of SDHS and placed Lone Hill Middle School on a lockdown as a precaution.  Every student was moved inside a classroom or an office.  The San Dimas Sheriff’s Department searched SDHS.  They also went room to room checking for this individual.   No weapon was found, there was no actual sighting of a person with a gun, and there were no injuries.  They learned that this call was a prank call by a student.  This student was detained and taken into custody for making the prank call.
 
Through every incident, we learn more about our practices and this will be no exception.  The safety of our students and staff will continue to be our highest priority.
 
  *   Each school has an Emergency Response Plan (ERP) that delineates procedures to follow in an emergency.
  
  *   We maintain very close relationships with local law enforcement and the fire department.  We conduct emergency drills and perform training in conjunction with them on a regular basis.
 
  *   Schools continually assess response protocols to improve emergency response plans.

  *   Our staff is continually reminded to have a heightened sense of awareness for suspicious people and behavior. All threats are taken seriously.
  
As a parent of two children who attend local public schools, I share your concerns about student safety on campuses.  I empathize with you and your children for today’s incident at San Dimas High School and Lone Hill Middle School.  No family should have to experience the fear and anxiety that was felt today.

We look forward to tomorrow, our first Friday of school, to the Smudge Pot Game on September 14, 2019 and to a great 2019-2020 school year.

The Station’s jurisdiction encompasses approximately 276 square miles.
