August 24, 2019 I-70 accident details
On 8-24-2019 at 6:18am a serious accident occured on the west bound span of the I-70 river bridge going into West Terre Haute. A flat bed commercial truck driven by Spyridon Visvardis of Oaklawn Illinois was in the passing lane turning left into the median to deliver construction supplies. A silver Chevrolet Silverado driven by Michael Nave of North Webster Indiana was in the passing lane directly behind the flat bed truck. It appeared that the Chevrolet pick up rear ended the flat bed truck at a high rate of speed causing severe damage to the Chevrolet pick up.
The Vigo County Sheriff's Office and Sugar Creek Fire Dept responded. The driver of the Chevrolet pick up had to be extricated by Sugar Creek Fire Department and appeared to have suffered severe trauma. He was transported by Transcare Ambulance to Regional Hospital and then lifelined to IU Medical Center in Indianapolis where he remains in stable condition.
Indiana State Police assisted in rerouting traffic off of I-70 at the 11 mile marker so the accident could be investigated by the Vigo County Sheriff's Office. The driver of the flat bed truck showed no signs of impairment and was not injured. The flat bed truck had been carrying several hundred gallons of epoxy which took time for the Haz Mat Team and Eddington wrecker service to clean up and make the interstate safe for travel.
