Public Works
 
 Projects—
  • Pearl Street Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program Improvements –           Saw-cutting for concrete removals began the week of August 26th.  Full removal operations of sidewalk and some curb and gutter will begin on the North Side of Pearl Street as soon as color sampling for new stamped sidewalk is confirmed.  Access to businesses will be maintained throughout construction.
 
  • Curran Road Highway Safety Improvement Program Project – Traffic Control and Protection measures are now up and erosion control protection measures are now completed.  Brush clearing for fill placement will follow within the next week.  Underground work including storm sewer laterals is anticipated to begin shortly.
 
  • 2019 Road Resurfacing Program – Asphalt removals over concrete curb and gutter began the week of August 26th.  Saw-cutting for concrete removals is now completed and concrete removals are anticipated to begin this week.
 
Personnel—
  • Staff Engineer – On Tuesday September 3rd, Greg Gruen began his employment with the City as a Staff Engineer with the Public Works Department.  Greg is a Registered Professional Engineer with a wealth of experience on both the development and municipal infrastructure fronts.  Greg was recently working in private consulting for a large engineering firm in the Chicagoland Region.
 
Street Division—
  • Crews put down over 80 tons of asphalt on Kensington Drive and Timber Trail. 
 
 
Utility Division—
  • Personnel installed a new fire hydrant at the intersection of Park Lane Avenue and Victor Drive. This will improve fire protection and improve water quality through the City’s hydrant flushing program.
 
Water Division –
  • On Wednesday September 4th, Superintendent Palmer arranged a Water Treatment Plant tour with students from Montini Middle School. Approximately 15-20 people attended. The students will be participating in a “Future City” competition as part of National Engineers' Week in February 2020. There are 5 components to the project: project plan, virtual city, essay, model and presentation. The theme is: "Identify a threat to your city's water supply and design a resilient system to maintain a reliable supply of clean drinking water."

  • Investigated 4 Motor Vehicle Accidents
  • Conducted 109 Traffic Stops
  • Conducted over 119 Business Checks and Foot Patrols
  • Handled 4 calls for service involving Domestic Disputes
  • Handled 3 calls for service involving crisis intervention
  • Arrested 6 individuals on State criminal charges

Training:
 
Officer Robert Beaudoin attended training on Comprehensive DUI Awareness hosted by the Mundelein Police Department.
 
Public Relations:
 
The McHenry Police Department, Johnsburg Police Department and Brooke from Fabulous Faces participated with Culver’s McHenry (1101 Adams Drive) on the Butterburgers & Badges event.  Officers and Special Olympics athletes provided table service for guests dining inside, and also delivered the restaurant chain’s famed burgers and fresh frozen custard desserts to those visiting the drive-thru.  Tips and donations were collected, which, along with $1 for every purchase of any size Concrete Mixer, benefited the athletes of Special Olympics - Illinois.

Economic Development

Walk-Thru at Central Wastewater Treatment Plant
Mayor Wayne Jett, Alderwoman Sue Miller, Wayne Kurchina, Wastewater Superintendent Russ Ruzicka and Director of Economic Development Doug Martin did a walk-thru of the central wastewater treatment plant in a continuing effort to pursue efforts to discuss the marketing of the site for redevelopment.  Staff will bring forward a proposed real estate contract for the site to the September 16 City Council meeting.
 
Special Planning and Zoning Meeting on Adult-Use Cannabis
A Special Planning and Zoning Commission meeting will be held on September 24 at 7:30 p.m. to discuss adult-use cannabis.  Staff is working on a draft ordinance to permit adult-use cannabis in the City of McHenry with restrictions as outlined by the City Council at their September 3 meeting.  The ordinance will be considered by the Planning and Zoning Commission at the public hearing on September 24.

Parks and Recreation

  • Friday Instructor’s Choice class this week 9/6 is BodyStep with Becky.
 
General/Rentals
  • Free “Pedal My Bike” bike rides are being offered from the Recreation Center, led by Joe Scherb and Lenny Anelli from League of American Bicyclists & Geared to Work. There are 4 Sunday rides. Participants are encouraged to pre-register. The program is intended for adults and children ages 8 & up to promote community, fitness, the BikeMC program, and local trails & routes in the area.
 
Athletics/Aquatics/Swim Team/Field Rentals – Nicole
Highlights:
  • Pool season was extended and we will be open the next two weekends. 9/7-9/8 & 9/14-9/15 with weekend hours of Adult/Lap Swim 11 AM-12 PM and Open Swim from 12-6 PM.
This Week in Programs
  • Swim team tryouts on Monday 9/9 at the Merkel Aquatic Center starting at 5:30 pm. 4 day trial 5:30-6:30 pm Tuesday, 9/10 through Thursday, 9/13.
 
Maintenance
  • 80 yards of ASTM certified playground mulch was installed at Freund Field playground and Liberty Trails playground.
  • Extensive tree removal has been completed at Knox Park
  • Crews are preparing softball & soccer field for the upcoming fall seasons.
  • Brush removal and tree removal has been completed at Althoff Park.
  • Preparations are underway for the September 14th Riverwalk Foundation “Light the Night” event on Miller Point.
 
Departmental
  • The City will once again host a September 11th commemorative ceremony at 9am on 9/11 at Veterans Memorial Park.  The ceremony will include the mayor, the police department, the fire department, the McHenry County Color Guard and the McHenry High School Choir.
  • Staff is working with the Riverwalk Foundation to finalize the details of a cooperative event on September 14th from 5-10pm. The event capitalizes on the wine walk events earlier in the day and will be highlighted by the initial lighting of fire globes that will be placed in Boone Creek adjacent to the Riverwalk along Miller Point . The event will also include 6 crafters displaying and peddling their goods, two to three local restaurants as well as live music in the gazebo.
  • The concession/washroom building at Fox Ridge will be inspected by the McHenry County Health Department and will be open next week.
