Public Works
 
Projects—
  • Pearl Street Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program Improvements – Pours for concrete light pole foundations are ongoing and are being completed along Pearl Street.  The section of stamped concrete along Veterans Parkway which was poured in the wrong color has been removed and replaced.  Concrete removals in front of businesses on Pearl Street east of Park Street have been completed and pours will begin next week.  Directional boring for electrical distribution systems is anticipated to begin shortly.
 
  • 2019 Road Resurfacing Program – Asphalt milling has been completed on all project locations within Glacier Ridge Subdivision.  Laydown for asphalt binder course began on 9/26 and will be completed later in the week.  Asphalt milling on Curran Road will begin upon completion of all binder course placement within Glacier Ridge Subdivision.
 
  • Curran Road Highway Safety Improvement Program Project – Brush clearing for fill was completed last week.  All remaining sections of silt fence have now been installed.  Fill placement for recoverable slopes is yet to be completed.  HMA paving and asphalt surface course removal will be coordinated with asphalt milling on the Curran Road portion of the Road Resurfacing Program.
 
Street Division—
  • In preparation for the 2019-2020 winter operations, Public Works mechanics started prepping the trucks and plows.
 
  • Crews have accepted deliveries of over 1,700 tons of salt in preparation for winter operations as well.
 
  • Asphalt patching continued in the Lakeland Park neighborhood with crews putting down over 150 tons of material.
 
Utility Division—
  • On Saturday, September 21st around 3:30PM, the Utility Division was notified of a water main break on Grand Avenue west of North Drive.  Personnel arrived to find water shooting 30 feet in the air and immediately began shutting down the water main.  The water main was repaired and put back into service around 7:00PM. A boil order was issued to the 11 homes affected and was lifted Tuesday morning after sample results returned satisfactory.
 
  • On Monday, September 23rd, personnel repaired a water main break on West Avenue.  There was no disruption in service.
  • Hydrant flushing is ongoing and is anticipated to conclude early next week.
 
Community Development

Demolition permits have been issued and work to remove the structures from the property has begun.
 
3112 Lincoln (Watertower Marina)
Architectural and engineering plans have been submitted for Watertower Marina. Plans include the partial demolition of the main building,  a full restaurant with a 3000 sq/ft deck looking over the water. Parking lot improvements include new asphalt and striping around the entire building along with new parking lot lighting. A berm will be installed on the rear of the property that abuts residential.  
 
Economic Development 
 Planning and Zoning Commission

At this week’s special meeting, the Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously recommended approval of Text amendments to the City of McHenry Zoning Ordinance including but not limited to:  Article III General District Regulations, Article V Commercial Districts, Article VI Office, Industrial, Business Park, Agricultural and Mining Overlay and Health Care Districts, Article VII Off-Street Parking and Loading, Article XIX Definitions of the City of McHenry Zoning Ordinance and Chapter 7.50 Signs of the City of McHenry Municipal Code pertaining to Adult-Use Cannabis.
 
Economic Development Commission
Rich Wimmer, owner of Mr. Don’s Cleaners, was presented with a business recognition award for 50 years in business in the City of McHenry.
 
MTI Expo (Manufacturing, Trade, and Industry Expo)
Staff attended the MTI Expo at McHenry East Campus which brought local McHenry County Industries to McHenry Community High School to help promote their needs and the educational pathways that could benefit students as they seek careers.  Several Senior students applied for $1,000 in post-secondary tech scholarships sponsored by the McHenry Sunrise Rotary Club.

McHenry Police Department Weekly Brief
Time Period: Thursday 09/19/2019 thru Wednesday 09/25/2019
 
During this time period the McHenry Police Department:
  • Handled 491 calls for service
  • Investigated 14 Motor Vehicle Accidents
  • Conducted 105 Traffic Stops
  • Conducted over 105 Business Checks and Foot Patrols
  • Handled 7 calls for service involving Domestic Disputes
  • Handled 7 calls for service involving crisis intervention
  • Arrested 9 individuals on State criminal charges
 
Training:
 
Telecommunicator Gonzalez attended Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) certification training hosted at the Northwest Central Dispatch Center in Arlington Heights, Illinois.
 
On behalf of the McHenry County Substance Abuse Coalition, Officer Polidori attended training called “High in Plain Sight” in Appleton, Wisconsin.   This training focused on the current drug culture, specifically the vaping trends and apparel that school children wear to conceal vaping products.
 
Public Relations:
 
On September 19th, 2019, Officer Polidori, Officer J. Ducak and Officer Staines attended the Brake Parts company “Wellness” picnic.  At the event the officers provided the employees wellness and safety-related information, gun locks, child identification kits, child safety seat information (mainly in Spanish) and information about child abduction and trafficking information through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

The following personnel have recently completed the respective years of service with the McHenry Police Department:

  • Officer Samuel Shafer – 5 Years
  • Telecommunicator Kelly Schmitt – 5 Years
  • Officer Ryan Ehardt – 4 Years
 
On September 23rd, 2019, the police department welcomed a new officer.  Susan Ellis was sworn in as a Probationary Police Officer.  Susan comes to the McHenry Police Department with experience as a police officer with the Village of Cary and still start immediately in the department’s Field Training Program.
 
The police department also welcomes Canine Officer Yogi.  Officer Conway and Yogi have been paired together to start the canine training program with TOPS Kennels in Grayslake, Illinois.
