Stolen vehicle located on 5th street. Suspect was attempting to switch VIN numbers. Arrested for CHOP SHOP. See email

This morning one of our officers took a report of a stolen vehicle that was taken during the night.  At 10:50am one of our Parking Enforcement Officers located the stolen vehicle at the end of 5th street in Oakley.  The suspect was seen with the hood up and appeared to be working on the vehicle engine.  Oakley PD Officers responded and it was discovered the suspect was using a grinder to switch the VIN numbers from one Honda to another.  Vehicles have several VINs and they’re used to identify the vehicle.  By switching the VINs and license plates a suspect can drive around in a stolen vehicle without being captured.  In this case the two vehicles were the same year, model and color.  The suspect had a warrant out for his arrest for a separate stolen vehicle case.  He was booked into the Main Jail for Possession of Stolen Property, Stolen Vehicle and operating a CHOP SHOP.
