Coffee Shop Robbery Suspects Arrested

On Monday, September 30, 2019, at 1:51PM, San Leandro Police Officers were dispatched to the Starbucks Coffee Chop at 1057 MacArthur Boulevard after receiving reports of a robbery.  When officers arrived, they found an abandoned vehicle that had crashed in the center median of Macarthur Boulevard.

Officers began interviewing witnesses and learned that a suspect had entered Starbucks and stole a computer laptop from a Starbucks patron.  After unlawfully gaining possession of the laptop, the suspect, a 24-year-old male from Oakland, ran out of Starbucks to an awaiting vehicle that was parked along the west curb of Macarthur Boulevard.  Witnesses including the owner of the computer chased after the suspect and prevented the suspect vehicle for leaving, which led to it crashing and being abandoned in the center median.

After the suspect vehicle crashed, the suspect, along with three other occupants fled from the vehicle in various directions.  Two of which, sixteen and seventeen-year-old females from Oakland, were immediately located and detained by responding officers without incident.  However, the suspect, and another 18-year-old male from Oakland, were able to avoid immediate apprehension by fleeing into backyards and into the San Leandro Creek.  After an expansive search, which utilized Unmanned Aerial Systems by the San Leandro Police Department and Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, the eighteen-year-old, identified as Kevin Perry, was located inside a home in the 800 Block of Cary Drive.  The 24-year-old suspect who stole the laptop was never located.

San Leandro Police Detectives then began their investigation into this theft.  They learned the four suspects together planned out this theft, which each having their own role in the robbery, and were able to identify the outstanding 24-year-old suspect.

On Tuesday, October 1, 2019, 24-year-old Labari Perry was located and arrested in the 5900 block of Fortune Avenue in Oakland.

On October 2, 2019, Detectives met with the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office and presented this case for charging.  Eighteen-year-old Kevin Perry and twenty-four-year-old Labari Perry, who are not related, were charged with committing a robbery.  They are both currently being held at the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.  The 16-year-old and 17-year-old female suspects, who are not being identified because they are juveniles, were transported to Alameda County Juvenile Hall where they are also expected to be charged with robbery.

San Leandro Police Lieutenant Ted Henderson said, “Unfortunately laptop thefts are occurring quite frequently, not just in San Leandro, but in many cities throughout they Bay Area.”  “However, to combat these thieves, there are several steps you can take to reduce the risk of your laptop being stolen.”  If you go to a coffee shop to work on your computer, please follow these tips:

Please be aware of your surroundings always, and if possible, wear only one of the two earphones so you can still hear in case there is any immediate emergencies.

If you are going to work on your laptop, consider picking a spot that is not near the doors (easy access for thieves).

Try not to sit with your back to parking lots or other open spaces so you will be aware of persons approaching.

Never leave any of your personal property unattended where someone could easily take your property.

Also, if you become a victim of this type of crime or any other violent crime, please notify the police immediately by call 9-1-1. Please refrain from taking action by attempting to confront or chase after the suspect(s). These situations can become dangerous and possibly deadly. Be a good witness, take note of suspect(s) descriptions, clothing, a direction of flight, getaway vehicle and license plate information. Your safety and the safety of others is most important in these circumstances.
