Newark Police Investigate Fatal Traffic Collision
Newark, California (Monday, October 14, 2019)
On Sunday evening September 29th at approximately 8:26 p.m., Newark Police Officers and members of the Alameda County Fire Department responded to a reported traffic collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian on Newark Boulevard north of Cedar Boulevard. Upon arrival, personnel found a collision scene and rendered aid to an adult male pedestrian that had been struck by a vehicle. The male was transported by ambulance to an area hospital, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The pedestrian has been identified as Michael Diehl, a 64-year-old male of Berkeley. The driver of the involved vehicle, a 36-year-old male of Pinole, remained on scene and is cooperating with investigators. Drugs or alcohol are not believed to be a factor. Preliminary investigation is indicating the pedestrian had entered the northbound lanes of Newark Boulevard outside of a crosswalk. At this time, the collision remains under investigation.
