FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Take Part in the Great California ShakeOut, Register for Sacramento Alert

(McClellan, CA) – On October 17 at 10:17 AM the the county will participate in a statewide exercise called the Great California ShakeOut. This exercise focuses on a state-wide catastrophic earthquake impacting California residents This exercise focuses on a statewide catastrophic earthquake impacting California residents. We urge residents and businesses to use this opportunity to prepare for the many hazards that threaten our community and to take proactive steps in ensuring you receive timely information during those emergencies.

This past winter seasons are reminders of our flood threats in the area and we currently see the danger posed by wildfire and grassland fires throughout the state. Both wildfires and storm flooding occur rapidly, forcing evacuations and road closures to neighborhoods. Sacramento Alert, the County’s mass notification system – built upon the Everbridge® Platform - , is a critical link for residents to immediately learn of any required actions, such as evacuating their homes during an imminent fire.  Sacramento County and city partners rely heavily on this communication tool to warn you of potential hazards and the actions you and your family can take to remain safe.

On —October 17, 2019, Sacramento, Yolo and Placer County residents will receive a call to test Sacramento Alert. The drill will replicate a large scale, multi-jurisdictional emergency requiring thousands of numbers to be called simultaneously across Sacramento tri-county region. This is the third annual regional test of the system and will include 7 participating cities as well as Sacramento County’s unincorporated areas.

The distinctive feature of Sacramento Alert is the ability to register more than one contact method at a specific address. Registrations of cell phone and alternate numbers dramatically increase the ability to reach the greatest number of community members within minutes. This enables landlines, cell phones and e-mail addresses to be incorporated into a single notification system.  The newest system feature is the Everbridge® “App” which will send push notifications based on your smartphone’s location at the time of an emergency and can warn you of evacuation areas, flooded road conditions, police emergencies that require sheltering in place and much more.  App downloads are available from the Apple Store for iOS devices and Google Play store for Android.

Residents can do their part to prepare for emergencies by registering for Sacramento Alert. The time is now to self-register cell phone numbers and e-mail addresses and download the App to be a part of the regional test. For more information or to register alternate phone numbers or e-mail addresses, visit www.sacramento-alert.org.
