Advisory

The HWDPS will be accepting unwanted e-cigarettes and vaping devices for disposal on Saturday, October 26, 2019, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

To help combat the continued vaping health crisis across the country, On Saturday, October 26, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Harper Woods Department of Public Safety and the Drug Enforcement Administration will give the public an opportunity to turn in unwanted e-cigarettes, and vaping devices. Bring your unwanted devices for disposal to the Harper Woods DPS at 19617 Harper Ave. The service is free and anonymous; no questions asked.

Through discussions with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), DEA has determined that e-cigarettes and vaping devices WITHOUT the internal batteries are considered household hazardous waste and will be accepted. Devices WITH batteries in them, however, are a different waste stream designation and, more importantly, are considered a potential fire hazard. Therefore, they will not be accepted. For those that have batteries that cannot be removed, please contact your local hazardous waste management facility, or you can check with large electronic chain stores who may accept the devices for proper disposal.
