Advisory: Possible Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) Thursday, October 24, 2019

Southern California Edison has begun its 48-hour advance notifications to customers that it may be proactively turning power off for public safety and conducting a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) on Thursday, October 24, 2019 though it may occur earlier depending on actual weather conditions. Resident notifications were issued by text messages, email and automated phone calls this afternoon.

A primary focus should be to those customers who rely on electricity for critical life-sustaining equipment. We encourage those residents to sign up for SCE’s Medical Baseline program at 1-800-447-6620 or their website at www.sce.com/residential/assistance/medical-baseline. SCE telephone operators are available Monday- Friday 6am to 9pm and Saturday 8am to 5pm P.D.T.

For the convenience of those with critical life-sustaining equipment an evacuation site will be provided to you at the Stallion Springs Community Services District building 27800 Stallion Springs Drive, Tehachapi, CA. Please note that this facility does not have qualified medical personnel to assist with life sustaining equipment and cannot provide any transportation needs. Residents on ventilators, continuous IV, oxygen concentrators and auto feeding tubes, will be helped by a group of volunteers. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us at (661) 822- 3268 or (661) 861-3110. If you are in need of emergency assistance please call 9-1-1.

Here are some helpful tips:

Before an Outage:
• Create a safety plan for all members of your family, including pets.
• Prepare an emergency supply kit with enough water and nonperishable food to last your household one week.
• Determine if your landline will work during an outage.
• Keep mobile phones and other devices charged.
• If you have a generator, make sure you know how to operate it safely
• Have flashlights available, avoid using candles.
• Have a battery-powered or hand crank radio.
• Stock up on the right batteries for items you rely on.
• Keep cash on hand and a full tank of gas. ATMs and gas stations may not be available during an outage.
• Learn how to manually operate your garage door or any other door that operates with electricity.
• Talk with your building manager if you live or work in a building that has elevators or electronic key card access to understand how they will deal with a possible multi-day outage.
During an Outage:
• Keep freezers and refrigerators closed. The refrigerator will keep food cold for about four hours. A full freezer will keep the temperature for about 48 hours. Use coolers with ice if necessary. Monitor temperatures with a thermometer.
• Maintain food supplies that do not require refrigeration.
• Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Generators, camp stoves, or charcoal grills should always be used outdoors and at least 20 feet away from windows. Never use a gas stove top or oven to heat your home.
• Check on your neighbors. Older adults and young children are especially vulnerable to extreme temperatures.
• Go to a community location with power if heat or cold is extreme.
• Turn off or disconnect appliances, equipment, or electronics. Power may return with momentary “surges” or “spikes” that can cause damage.
After an Outage:
• When in doubt, throw it out! Throw away any food that has been exposed to temperatures 40 degrees or higher for two hours or more, or that has an unusual odor, color, or texture.
• If the power is out for more than a day, discard any medication that should be refrigerated, unless the drug’s label says otherwise. If a life depends on the refrigerated drugs, consult a doctor or pharmacist and use medicine only until a new supply is available.
