Red Flag Warning and Public Safety Power Shutoff Updates for the City of Fremont
The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for the East Bay on Saturday, October 26, 2019, at 8 p.m. through Monday, October 28, 2019, at 11 a.m.
A Red Flag Warning means critical fire weather conditions will occur in the form of low humidity, high heat and wind. Red Flag Warnings are typically issued for weather events that may result in extreme fire behavior within 24 hours. The Fremont Fire Department will have extra firefighters on duty to augment fire protection in the City of Fremont.
Due to the high fire danger, PG&E has announced a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) from approximately 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 26, 2019, to 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 28, 2019. The power shutoff plan and schedule is dependent upon weather conditions and patterns. Certain areas in Fremont, primarily east of Niles and Mission Boulevard, and south to interstate 680 may be impacted.
To learn more about the anticipated power shutoff, and/or to see if you are in the impacted area, visit PG&E’s PSPS website at https://psps.ss.pge.com.
In the event the PG&E website is unavailable, you may also visit the PSPS interactive map for Fremont residents created by the City of Fremont GIS Team by visiting: http://www.fremont.gov/PowerOutageMap
(*Please note the impacted areas listed on the map may change.)
We would like to encourage Fremont residents, businesses and visitors to be extremely cautious throughout the weekend during the Red Flag Warning. One less spark could mean one less wildfire.
Here are a few tips on preventing wildfires:
Equipment Safety:
Never mow or trim dry grass on a Red Flag Warning Day. (Mow before 10 a.m. on a day when it is NOT hot and windy).
Never use lawn mowers in dry vegetation.
Avoid power equipment that creates sparks.
Spark arresters are required in wildland areas on all portable gasoline powered equipment.
Vehicle Safety:
Never pull over in dry grass.
Ensure trailer chains don't drag on the ground.
Make sure your vehicle is properly maintained.
General Safety:
Make sure cigarette butts are properly extinguished.
Avoid activities with open flames or sparks.
Never burn landscape debris like leaves or branches on NO Burn Days or when it's windy or areas where not allowed.
Dial 911 immediately if you see smoke or fire.
As a friendly reminder, all fireworks are banned in the City of Fremont. This ban includes the “Safe and Sane” fireworks that are legal in other cities within Alameda County. In effect since December 1986, the fireworks ban has aided in reducing the number of injuries, wildland fires, and structure fires in Fremont.
