Press Release: Milpitas Police Department to Participate in “Movember” to Raise Awareness for Men’s Health
DATE: October 29, 2019
LOCATION: City of Milpitas
The Milpitas Police Department is proudly participating in the annual “Movember” campaign, supporting men’s health and raising awareness for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention throughout the month of November. The goal of Movember is to increase early cancer detection, diagnosis and effective treatments, and ultimately reduce the number of preventable deaths.
Many Milpitas Police Officers will begin the month of November clean-shaven and then may put away their razors to grow a mustache or beard to show their support for the health campaign. Much like the Milpitas Police Department proudly supported Breast Cancer Awareness month in October by wearing pink patches on their uniforms, Officers may also wear a light blue mustache pin for the month.
In addition to participating in Movember, the Milpitas Police Department supports mental health year-round through a Peer Support Program. The program provides all public safety employees in Milpitas, both sworn staff and professional non-sworn staff, with the opportunity to receive emotional and tangible support through times of personal and/or professional crisis. The Peer Support program was developed and implemented under the organizational structure of the Milpitas Police Department and receives the highest levels of support. Peer Support team members receive ongoing training to help them identify and respond to the stress and tragedies experienced in law enforcement and are available to listen and assist employees with the variety of referrals services.
