Advisory
Fire management staff at Point Reyes National Seashore, in collaboration with Marin County Fire Department, Bolinas Fire Protection District, and numerous local fire agencies are scheduled the burning between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. November 13-15 but may reschedule depending on weather conditions.
The area to be burned is in four property units that make up a total of 205 acres on the east side of Highway 1 approximately seven miles south of Olema and four miles north of Bolinas.
Fire agencies publicize prescribed burns in advance to reduce calls to emergency dispatchers and to educate about the benefits of such burns. Point Reyes National Seashore is using prescribed fire to create a strategic fuel break along the Highway 1 corridor where a wildfire will be easier to control. Prescribed fire is also an effective tool to reduce the invasive French broom and maintain open grasslands.
The McCurdy Trail will be closed for one to two days during active ignitions. No road closures are anticipated, however, and there may be short traffic delays along Highway 1 while burning is in progress. Drivers should use extra caution along Highway One if smoke is present.
Short-term smoke impacts may affect the Olema Valley, Stinson Beach, and the San Geronimo Valley. Smoke sensitive individuals are encouraged to avoid or minimize exposure to smoke.
