Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety Receives Grant for Bicycle/Pedestrian Safety Education Program

The Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety (DPS) has historically made it a priority to provide education to the community that promotes the safety of people who use roadways to walk or ride bicycles.

To support our ongoing efforts, DPS has received a $45,500.00 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) that will fund a year-long program (Oct. 1, 2019 to Sept. 30, 2020). Planned activities include bike rodeos, classroom presentations and community events aimed at teaching youth and adults about the traffic rules, rights and responsibilities that apply to pedestrians and bicyclists. Educational components focused on bicycle and pedestrian safety will be especially geared toward children and older adults. These activities are part of a comprehensive program that promote safe behaviors by pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers.

“No matter which way you get around, you play a part in roadway safety,” OTS Director Barbara Rooney said. “These grant programs are intended to educate residents on ways they can make themselves and those around them safe when they walk or bike.”

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
