Holiday Safety Tips: Keeping Children Safe in Crowds
With the busy holiday season upon us, we will often find ourselves in crowded, busy areas. Whether you are at the mall, a holiday tree lighting ceremony, or our very own Festival of Lights Parade, it is easy for children and their adults to get separated. Keep these safety tips in mind as you venture out:
- Before leaving the house, take a photo of your child with a camera or phone. If you become separated, you will have an up-to-date photo of your child and what he or she is wearing to give to officials.
- Teach your child about safe people, such as police officers, security, firefighters, or crossing guards who can help them. If none of these are available, encourage them to find another mom with kids to assist them.
- Kids should be taught your full names and phone numbers. For the wee little ones, options include putting your phone number in their pocket, on bead necklaces, or sticker sealed paper wrist bands.
- Once you arrive at your destination, designate a meeting spot in case you get separated from each other. The location should be distinctive and easy to find, such as a statue, or restaurant with a bright marquee.
- Talk with children about the trusted adults in their life who help keep them safe, and what to do when they encounter someone they don't know. Teach them never to get into a car or go along with someone unfamiliar to them. Practice with your child to forcefully say "no!" and move away as fast as possible, loudly yelling for help.
