Officer-involved shooting of a dog in East Bakersfield

On Thursday, November 28, 2019, deputies from Metro Patrol were dispatched to check the welfare of a suicidal subject in the 5000-block of Monterey Street. Upon arrival to the subject’s residence, deputies were made aware the subject had fled toward Fairfax Road.

Deputies circulated the area and located an adult male subject matching the description near the intersection of Niles Street and Fairfax Road at approximately 12:08 p.m. The subject was in the company of four (4) large breed dogs. Deputies attempted to converse with the subject, who was uncooperative in providing information. During the conversation, two of the dogs became loose and one attacked an uninvolved bystander on the sidewalk. Deputies opened fire and struck the dog. The male subject, later identified as 57-year-old John Borneman, remained uncooperative before being placed under arrest for public intoxication and delaying an investigation. He was transported to the Central Receiving Facility for booking.

The bystander’s name and injuries suffered are unknown at this time. Kern County Animal Control arrived on scene to take custody of the dog. Its condition is also unknown at this time.

This case is still pending further investigation, and anyone with information is encouraged to call the Sheriff’s Office at (661) 861-3110 or the Secret Witness Hotline at (661) 322-4040.
