Advisory

Don't be a Package Theft Victim

PRESS RELEASE

DON’T BE A PACKAGE THEFT VICTIM
DATE: December 31, 2019
LOCATION: City of Milpitas

During the holiday season, there has been an increase in package thefts throughout the Bay Area and the City of Milpitas; which will continue into the new year as more and more people continue to shop online and have packages delivered to their homes. The Milpitas Police Department has identified many of package thefts are occurring on Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 2 P.M. and 6 P.M., and a concentration of these thefts are occurring in high-density residential neighborhoods along the McCandless Drive and Montague Expressway areas. To help minimize the possibility of our residents becoming victim of package thieves, the Milpitas Police Department would like to remind everyone to consider having packages delivered to their workplace or to the home of a relative/neighbor/friend whom may be home during the delivery time. Online retailers, such as Amazon, allow for packages to be delivered to Amazon Hub Lockers and in addition to allowing their Prime customers to choose, Amazon Day, which allows you to pick delivery on the day you choose. Taking these steps could prevent you from becoming a victim of package theft.

The Milpitas Police Department is actively using the Ring Neighbors app to view video footage publicly shared by our residents on the app. In some instances, Officers and Detectives have proactively contacted those posting a package theft video footage to determine if residents would like to make a theft report and/or obtain additional information for ongoing investigations. The community’s cooperation in our package theft investigations has been invaluable and is greatly appreciated.

The Milpitas Police Department will continue to proactively conduct bait package operations throughout the City utilizing items with GPS trackers inside bait packages to apprehend suspects stealing packages.

Residents are encouraged to report suspicious persons and/or vehicles by calling the Milpitas Police Department at 408-586-2400. Additionally, information regarding those involved in package theft can be given anonymously by calling the Crime Tip Hotline at (408) 586-2500 or via the Milpitas Police Department Website at: http://www.ci.milpitas.ca.gov/crimetip
