INDIANAPOLIS - Today the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) released final homicide statistics from 2019.

2019 Intentional Homicides (Murders): 152 
2018 Intentional Homicides (Murders): 158 
2019 Total Homicides: 171 
2018 Total Homicides: 178 
Self-defense/Defense of Another/Other non-criminal: 19

“For the first time in nearly a decade, our city has seen a decrease in the number of homicides impacting our community,” said IMPD Chief Randal Taylor. “This small victory is a notable one, but the fact remains that just one homicide in our city is one too many. Today, as we begin a new decade, let us all recommit ourselves to working together to make Indianapolis an even safer place to call home. Many thanks to the women and men of the IMPD for their selfless service, continuous engagement, and courageous actions throughout the year.”

IMPD continues to invest in efforts to address violence and build trust with the community, from growing the police force and returning the department to community-based beat policing, to leveraging technology to identify serial shooters and disrupt violent crime in the Crime Gun Intelligence Center. In 2019, IMPD increased pay for first- and second-year recruits to bolster officer recruitment and strengthened partnerships with local and federal law enforcement to hold violent perpetrators accountable. In 2020, the IMPD will expand partnerships with neighborhood groups and the City’s peacemakers for community-based violence prevention and intervention efforts and will continue to focus on connections to treatment over incarceration for those suffering from mental illness and addiction.
