On Sunday, February 2nd 2020, at approximately 8:00PM, the Morgan Hill Police Department responded to reports of a traffic collision on Condit Rd north of E. Dunne Ave. Officers arrived at the scene to find a 2-car head-on traffic collision with both drivers having sustained major injuries. Police and Fire personnel worked feverishly to rescue both drivers from the wreckage. Tragically, one of the drivers, later identified as 39 year-old Tapelu Tapelu from Hayward, died at the scene. The 2nd driver, a 49 year-old female Morgan Hill resident, had to be extracted from the wreckage by Morgan Fire and was flown to a local trauma hospital for emergency treatment where she was listed as stable.

Traffic investigators responded to the scene to conduct the fatal collision investigation. It was determined that Tapelu was driving southbound on Condit Rd in a Nissan Altima. As he negotiated the turn at the bend in the road south of Diana, he drifted into the northbound lane and collided head-on with an Audi being driven by the woman. Investigators learned that Tapelu was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision and alcohol is suspected as a factor. The Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office responded to the collision scene and made the appropriate notifications
