DATE/TIME: February 16, 2020/1:12 pm
INCIDENT: Hoist Rescue
LOCATION: Aztec Falls, Twin Peaks
VICTIM(S): Camille Arai, age 20 a resident of Rancho Palos Verde
SUMMARY:
On Sunday, February 16, 2020, at 1:12 p.m., the victim was hiking with friends in the Aztec Falls area of Twin Peaks when she suffered a medical emergency which caused her to fall approximately 10 feet,
landing on a rock face sustaining non-life threatening critical injuries.
Sheriff's Aviation was requested and 40King6 responded to the scene, locating Arai on a rock, near the water line. Due to the remote locaiton, the crew decided a hoist rescue was necessary and had Sheriff's Air Rescue 306 respond to the area.
Once onscene, Sheriff's Air Rescue 306 hovered approximately 100 feet above Arai as Crew Chief Steve Miller lowered Air Medics Bernie Horak and Peter Pang to assess Arai’s injuries. Based on the extent of her injuries Horak and Pang requested a stokes litter, which Miller lowered to them. Horak and Pang placed Arai in the stokes litter, then with the help of San Bernardino County Fire personnel moved the stokes litter containing Arai up the rock face to an area which allowed Miller to hoist her up to the helicopter in the safest manner possible.
Once Arai was secured in the helicopter, Miller hoisted Pang then Horak back up to the helicopter, and the crew transported Arai to a local area hospital for treatment of her injuries.
