Caltrans to activate ramp meters along State Route 99 in Ripon
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is preparing to activate newly-installed ramp meters along State Route 99 (SR-99) in San Joaquin and Stanislaus Counties beginning on Tuesday, March 3, 2020.
Ramp metering is an effective traffic management strategy that uses traffic signals and accompanying equipment and techniques to manage the on-ramp flow of traffic to maintain an efficient freeway system, and protect the investment made in constructing freeways by keeping them operating optimally at-or-near capacity.
Ramp meters in San Joaquin County will be activated sequentially, beginning with southbound SR-99 at Austin Road (March 3) and continuing south to include Jack Tone Road (March 10), Main Street (March 17), and SR-120/Yosemite Avenue (June 2). Activations on northbound SR-99 are scheduled as follows: Main Street (April 21), Milgeo Avenue (April 28), Colony Road (May 5), Jack Tone Road (May 12), Austin Road (May 19), and SR-120/Yosemite Avenue (May 26).
Meters in Stanislaus County will be activated beginning on southbound SR-99 at Hammett Avenue (March 24) and at SR-219/Kiernan Avenue (April 1). Northbound activations will begin at SR-219/Kiernan Avenue (April 7) and at Hammett Avenue (April 14).
One week prior to activation, meters will be in a “solid green” phase. These ramp meters are scheduled to be active Mondays through Fridays from 6:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m., and from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Caltrans will perform field surveillance, collect traffic data, adjust meter timing rates, and monitor the ramp queues. For more information about ramp metering and its benefits, motorists can view a short video by visiting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZuZLDM4_vM
