On March 4, 2020, at approximately 5:19 p.m., Palmdale deputies conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle in the area of 20th Street East and Palmdale Boulevard.
During the traffic stop, the suspect began making furtive movements and reaching underneath his seat, leading deputy personnel to believe the suspect was reaching for a weapon. Deputy personnel opened the suspect’s driver’s side door and ordered the suspect to exit his vehicle. The suspect shifted his vehicle into drive and began to drive away from the traffic stop. The suspect pushed deputy personnel away from his vehicle and slammed the driver’s side door on the deputy’s shoulder. The suspect then fled the traffic stop in his vehicle.
Deputies pursued the suspect throughout the streets of Palmdale and southbound on Sierra Highway toward the city of Acton. At Sierra Highway and Soledad Canyon, the suspect drove onto the southbound 14 freeway on ramp and conducted a U-turn on the freeway. The suspect made an additional U-turn and began to travel in the correct direction, southbound on the freeway. The California Highway Patrol engaged and took over the pursuit on the freeway.
News media helicopters captured the suspect tossing a
handgun onto the freeway. Several citizens called to report the location of the handgun.
CHP officers conducted a felony traffic stop of the suspects’ vehicle. Palmdale units arrived and took the suspect into custody without further incident.
With the assistance of the California Highway Patrol, the northbound 14 freeway traffic was stopped. Deputies searched the freeway and located a Glock, .45 caliber handgun which was broken into pieces. A Glock, ten round, loaded magazine was also found inside the suspects’ vehicle.
Deputies involved reported minor injuries and were treated at a local hospital.
The suspect was identified as Logan Spencer, 24. He was arrested for Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Peace Officer (245 (C) PC), Felony Evading (2800.2(a) CVC), and Possession of Loaded Firearm to Commit a Felony (25800(a) PC).
