City issues proclamation of local emergency on COVID-19

On Monday, March 9, the City of Bainbridge Island issued a Proclamation of Local Emergency in response to the Kitsap Public Health District’s March 8 confirmation of the county’s first positive COVID-19 case on Bainbridge Island. The proclamation allows the City to use all resources necessary to prepare for and respond to an outbreak, to adjust City policies and operations if needed, and to access state or federal funds and other resources related to emergency response. Read the proclamation here.

The public should be aware that Bainbridge Island Police personnel will be following additional protocols to help keep critical first responders as healthy as possible.  These may include the use of gloves or other personal protective equipment.

In addition, the City’s Municipal Court is allowing telephonic hearings to minimize the number of people coming through the court. Court staff request that if you are sick, please do not come to your court hearing or passport appointment. Contact the clerk at 206.842.5641 to reschedule your hearing/ passport appointment to a later date.

Following the current guidance from Kitsap Public Health, there are no changes to City operations or services at this time. City Council meetings and City Advisory Group meetings will proceed as usual.

The City will be working to arrange additional and more frequent cleaning services to City-owned public spaces at City Hall, the Bainbridge Island Senior Community Center, the Police Station, and the Municipal Court.

The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) remains on standby, which means Emergency Management Coordinator Anne LeSage and City leadership continue to monitor the situation and work with community partners. The need to have a full EOC activation will be determined by resource requests from local clinics, health care providers and other community partners.
