Walnut/Diamond Bar Sheriff’s Station would like to remind you to check your license plates (front and back) often and only when safe to do so.
Bad guys (and bad gals) have a maybe-not-so-new trick up their sleeves….. Swapping license plates in an effort to go undetected in the stolen car they are driving around in! And to do that, they are taking license plates from unsuspecting, hard-working people like yourselves.
Here’s the scoop…..Once the bad guys or bad gals steal a car, they know the license plate number will identify the vehicle as being stolen. To try avoid getting caught, they look for a car that is the same make and model as the stolen one so they can swap out the license plates. Once they do that, voila…now it looks like their stolen vehicle is just another car on the road and the regular ole car on the road looks like it is stolen.
If you find that the license plates on your vehicle are not actually your license plates, do not drive the car and call your local law enforcement agency immediately! If you find your license plates have been stolen, also contact your local law enforcement agency immediately so that proper documentation may be made without delay.
