We are aware that some cities have declared a state of emergency due to the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). At this time, there are no confirmed cases in the Antelope Valley. 

While City facilities may be open and operational with appropriate measures to protect the health of the community, we are planning for several contingency scenarios and taking decisive, informed action to limit the spread of COVID-19, while also ensuring the continuity of our services and programs. Unfortunately, some City services and events will be canceled, postponed or held online to minimize health risks. As a precautionary measure, many schools and businesses have also taken distinct steps to respond to the Coronavirus outbreak. Residents have been accumulating all the essential things needed to keep their families healthy and safe. These responses are essential to combatting this life-threatening virus. 

I want you to know that your health and safety is my top priority, as well.

For the past couple of months, the City has been working diligently to ensure we are best informed with the most accurate and up-to-date information and not reacting in such a way that increases hysteria or creates pandemonium. 

In addition to staying in contact with our Supervisor, Kathryn Barger, and heeding instruction from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the L.A. County Department of Public Health, the City has appointed two Deputy Mayors and employed an epidemiologist to provide expert opinion and guidance for the City’s following course(s) of action. Dr. Jonathan Truong, MD, an Infectious Disease Specialist; Dr. Larry Stock, MD, an Emergency Medicine Specialist; and Dr. Brandon Brown, MPH, PhD, a UCR Epidemiologist, are working together to actively monitor the coronavirus updates and advise us accordingly.

Every ensuing move will be with careful consideration and discussion. 

Like many others, we’re taking guidance from the World Health Organization, CDC, and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, all of which recommend washing hands often, sanitizing commonly touched surfaces, and avoiding touching your face and eyes as the most important preventive measures we can take. And, out of an abundance of caution, residents are encouraged to be prepared with 14 days of home supplies, food, and medication. 

For the coming weeks, the elderly and sick are encouraged to stay home, while everyone should increase social distancing. To assist and support residents in real-time, the Los Angeles County information line, 2-1-1, is sharing information and taking questions 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

At the core of our City’s purpose is a commitment to help all families, and we take this to heart in good times and bad. We will continue to work hard to keep our residents informed, so together we can support you and your families. We will do whatever is necessary to protect the health and safety of our community.
