Advisory

City Operations in response to COVID-19

Operating under National and State Emergency Declarations, effective at the conclusion of this evening’s city council meeting Monday, March 16, the City of Harper Woods will close city hall and all associated buildings until April 6, 2020.

Buildings affected include City Hall, Harper Woods Public Library, Neighborhood Economic Development Building and the Recreation Office.

The Harper Woods Department of Public Safety will still be open. Residents are encouraged to make any non-emergency police reports online through our website. Residents should still dial 9-1-1 for all emergencies. Decisions regarding the 32-A District Court will be determined by Chief Judge Daniel Palmer. All building inspections will be cancelled until April 6, 2020.

Trash pickup will continue normally scheduled pick-up days, and first responders including police and fire will still be on duty around the clock.

Residents with questions are encouraged to contact the City through the e-mail service provided on the City’s website. In addition, on the website the City has published several ways residents can digitally transact City business which residents are strongly encouraged to utilize. These options include everything from paying water and tax bills online, building licensure information, applications and fees. We will not be accepting any cash payments until further notice and will only accept checks or money orders. All payments can be deposited into the City Hall drop box located in the lobby off of Harper Avenue.

The City Council meeting scheduled for Monday, March 16 will still be held. However, during this period, we strongly urge residents to limit contact with others. Council agendas can be found on the City’s website. If residents have a “public comment” they, as always, may contact members of city council and/or the city manager with their comments. All other Board and or Commission meetings have been postponed until further notice, this includes Board of Review, Planning, Ordinance and Zoning Board of Appeals.

On behalf of the City, the Mayor, City Council and the City Manager realize that closing city hall and other buildings might be inconvenient, however, the safety of our residents and employees is the top priority. As we have been repeatedly advised, limiting contact with others is the only effective defense to the spread of COVID-19 at this time, we feel this temporary proactive shut-down is in the best interests of our citizens. Please bear with us, let’s work together. The City truly appreciates the patience and cooperation from all our residents in navigating this ever developing situation. Residents are encouraged to visit www.cdc.gov for the latest updates and tips on preventing the spread of the virus through our community.

Beginning today and for the next several weeks, the City Administration will continue to closely monitor the situation and update residents on City operations as necessary. Please bear in mind that this situation is changing rapidly and the City must also respond as quickly as possible.
