CHULA VISTA COVID-19 UPDATES AS OF MARCH 19, 2020

To stem the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19), the City of Chula Vista has suspended most services except for critical public safety services. City Hall plans to open for limited essential services on Thursday, March 19, but access to buildings will be restricted. This could change as State guidelines are updated regarding public interaction.

In addition, at the March 17 City Council meeting, the mayor and council voted unanimously to pass an ordinance enacting a moratorium to prevent evictions based on loss of income due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since individuals may experience potential loss of income and the ability to pay for housing during the COVID-19 pandemic, the emergency ordinance is essential to avoid unnecessary housing displacement and to prevent housed individuals from falling into homelessness. The ordinance includes evictions from rental or leased residential or commercial property or as a result of judicial foreclosure and is in effect through May 31, 2020. Chula Vista is following the Executive Order issued by Governor Newsom on March 16. The Governor may extend the executive order if deemed necessary.

“The health and well-being of Chula Vista residents during the COVID-19 outbreak remains our top priority,” said Mayor Mary Casillas Salas. “We are working to communicate information and provide limited services while following state mandates during this challenging time. Thank you for your patience and for doing what you can to reduce the spread of COVID-19.”

Following the directives of the San Diego County Health Officer, Chula Vista also is ordering the temporary closure of bars and other alcohol-serving establishments and on-site dining services, prohibiting certain public or private gatherings of 10 or more people, and cessation of classes or other school activities held on school campuses. This order is in effect immediately through March 31, 2020, and may be extended to help minimize the spread of the coronavirus.

All libraries, recreation centers and parks are closed and any activities cancelled through April 5. Entrance gates will be closed and park restrooms will be locked. Youth and adult sports held at parks and fields are also cancelled. For the safety of all park users, please refrain from accessing fenced and locked areas, including dog parks.

More information regarding what public service counters are open, online services and more can be found on the City’s website at www.chulavistaca.gov/coronavirus.
