Coronavirus/COVID-19 Update: City of Monterey Park’s “Safer at Home” Emergency Order Response

Monterey Park, Calif. March 20, 2020 The City of Monterey Park will continue to follow the lead of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in implementing protocols to protect the health and safety of everyone in public spaces and in providing accurate and timely updates to the community. At the March 18, 2020 Special City Council Meeting, the City Council proclaimed the Existence of a Local Emergency and the City announced the cancellation of non-essential services. The COVID-19 Pandemic continues to impact all facets of our community. Declaring a local emergency will provide flexibility to the City for rapidly responding to this crisis.
On March 19, 2020, California Governor Gavin Newsom issued a statewide order for all Californians called “Safer at Home.” In addition, Los Angeles County issued a separate mandatory order to slow the spread of COVID-19 within the County. The County’s order limits the gathering of people and requires the closure of non-essential businesses and uses such as: shopping malls, shopping centers, children’s playgrounds, and non-essential retail businesses. The County Order is in effect for one month begin at 11:59 p.m. on March 19, 2020 and ending on April 19, 2020. The City of Monterey Park’s residents and businesses are subject to the State and County Orders.
You Can…
• Go to the grocery, convenience or warehouse store.
• Go to the pharmacy to pick up medications and other healthcare necessities.
• Go to medical appointments (check with your doctor or provider first).
• Go to a restaurant for take-out, delivery or drive-thru.
• Care or support a friend or family member.
• Take a walk, ride your bike, hike, jog and be in nature for exercise-just keep at least six feet between you and others in the community.
• Walk your pets and take them to the veterinarian if necessary.
• Help someone to get necessary supplies.

You Should Not…
• Go to work unless you are providing essential services as defined by this Order.
• Visit friends and family if there is no urgent need.
• Maintain less than six feet of distance from others when you go out.
• Visit loved ones in the hospital, nursing home, skilled nursing facility or other residential care facility.
The intent of this action is to avoid the spread of COVID-19 by having people shelter in place (another way of saying stay home) at their residence, while enabling only essential services to continue. When people need to leave their place of residence to obtain or perform vital services or to conduct activities necessary for the continuity of social and commercial life, they should maintain a distance of six feet from other persons. Failure to comply with the provisions of this action constitutes a threat to public health.

Help Desk Extended Hours

We understand that residents and stakeholders have questions regarding how to continue to conduct business with the City. In light of this action, the City has extended is Help Desk hours to assist with providing answers. The Help Desk can be reached daily (Sunday-Saturday) from 8:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m. at 626-307-1377 or at [email protected]. Important: Please do not call 911 to request testing for COVID-19 and please do not go to an emergency room unless you are seriously ill and require emergency care. If you have respiratory illness and want to know if you should be tested for COVID-19, it is best to call your health care provider or, if you don’t have a provider, call 211 or visit www.211LA.org for help finding a clinician near you.
