3/27/2020: A new message from First Selectman Jim Marpe

Update from First Selectman Jim Marpe on COVID-19

Westport, CT – The most recent State COVID-19 data can be found at https://portal.ct.gov/Coronavirus.  According to the Westport Weston Health District (WWHD), there have been 89 positive cases of COVID-19 in Westport.  Yesterday saw the smallest daily increase in Westport since the spread was first reported. This could be good news showing that more aggressive social distancing is starting to work, or the result of less testing in Fairfield County. At this point, there is no reason to ease the efforts of keeping your distance from others.

Mr. Marpe stated, “The Governor has issued another Executive Order restricting all social and recreational gatherings to no more than five people. Although there are some exceptions to this order, it is advice that we must take into consideration for every situation.  Very simply, for the benefit of yourself, your families, and your neighbors, DO NOT allow more than 5 people to congregate in your neighborhood, place of business, or in your home, unless they are from the same household currently isolating together. We continue to suggest that people get fresh air and exercise, but please do so responsibly and do not gather at any town park or recreation facility.”

Based upon the recommendations from the Westport/Weston Health District regarding the potential for animal fur to transmit the COVID-19 virus, the Parks and Recreation Department is instituting the following restrictions at Winslow Park:

  • No off leash areas.  All dogs must be kept on leash.
  • Pets are to be kept close to the handler.
  • The 6 ft. physical distancing protocol is to be followed for people and pets.

Please follow these protocols everywhere in town, including the paths around our schools and Longshore Park. In the name of safety, it is recommended that all dogs are leashed and distanced from people and other dogs when walking anywhere off private property. Appropriate precautions should be taken when caring for outdoor cats as well.

Parking at the Old Mill parking lot will be restricted to residents of Old Mill and Compo Mill Cove until further notice. Residents must display their Old Mill/Compo Mill Cove Resident Permits in their cars at all times.  Those without permits will not be allowed to park in the lot.

Westport is accepting ONLY response and recovery donations at curbside by appointment only Monday through Friday between 9:00AM and 12:00 PM. Items that do not assist with the response and recovery cannot be accepted at this time. For a list of currently acceptable donation items and to set up an appointment for pick up, Please go to westportct.gov/itemdonation

In order to continue prioritizing the COVID-19 response, but to keep the public meeting aspect of our local government going, the following updates to public meetings should be noted.

·         Elected bodies will continue to meet as needed and meetings will be televised on the usual cable channels using Zoom technology.
