City of San Fernando Closes All Parks on Easter Sunday (4/12/20)

The City of San Fernando hopes you and your loved ones are well and that you are coping with the challenges of your daily life in the fight to control the coronavirus (COVID-19). Parks are an important aspect of the health and joy for the San Fernando community and play a vital role in how San Fernando residents manage the changes to the way we all live, work and play.

The Recreation and Community Services Department continues to assess daily operations and implement precautionary measures in response to COVID-19 with the foremost being the health and safety of our residents. As directed by Los Angeles County’s “Safer at Home” Order and guidance from State and local officials, the Department wants to remind all park guests that 6 feet of physical distancing is required, and group gatherings are prohibited at all San Fernando Parks sites.

The Department will close all local community parks within the City to the public on Sunday, April 12, 2020, in an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19. This was a difficult decision knowing Easter is a day of celebration for many park guests and that parks are a traditional gathering place for family. However, the anticipated high volume of visitors would make it impossible for the public to implement safe physical distancing practices or prevent group gathering.

The park amenities at Recreation Park, Las Palmas Park, Pioneer Park, and Layne Park that will be closed on Easter, Sunday, April 12, include:

All multi-use fields and ball diamonds.
All picnic shelters and grills.
All outdoor basketball and tennis courts.
All playground areas and fitness equipment.
All restrooms will be closed for Easter.
Park buildings & indoor facilities remain closed to the public, including indoor gymnasiums, multi-purpose rooms, banquet rooms, and classrooms indefinitely.
Rudy Ortega Sr. Park and 8th Street Park remain closed to the public indefinitely.
Thank you for your support and understanding as we adapt to this fluid situation. These extraordinary efforts will help with the City, County and global effort to stop the spread of COVID-19.
