Possible fentanyl-related overdoses.
During the last week, the Gilroy Police Department responded to an increased number of drug overdose cases. Acting on their training, the responding officers were able to successfully revive the individuals by administering NARCAN. Although the drug(s) associated to these overdoses is unknown at this time, it is believed they are fentanyl related.
Fentanyl-related overdoses have spiked in Santa Clara County in recent weeks. This dangerous drug can be 50-100 times stronger than morphine. Narcotics dealers often add fentanyl to other drugs, such as heroin, to increase potency, resulting in potentially deadly overdoses. Our officers are trained to detect an opioid emergency and equipped with NARCAN, a nasal spray designed to counteract the life-threatening effects of an opioid overdose. Police are often the first emergency responders to arrive on scene, and tools like NARCAN allow our officers to administer lifesaving efforts before trained medical personnel arrive.
If you or someone you know is addicted to opioids please visit the County of Santa Clara Behavioral Health Services Substance Use Treatment Services webpage at https://www.sccgov.org/…/suts-resource…/pages/suts-info.aspx
