IMPD Chief Appoints Deputy Chief

Chief Taylor announces Command Staff changes

INDIANAPOLIS – Today, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) Chief Randal Taylor announced the appointment of Kendale Adams as Deputy Chief of Performance and Policy. Adams replaces Deputy Chief Michael Spears, who recently retired from the IMPD after a lengthy career of service to the Indianapolis community, including time serving as the Chief of Police. A private appointment ceremony was held on April 14 in the Chief’s Office.

“Deputy Chief Adams has long been involved in behind-the-scenes projects and planning,” said Chief Taylor. “As he steps into this new role, I know he will continue to focus on developing the policies that help move our agency forward.”

Deputy Chief Adams has served with IMPD for 22 years. He began his career as a patrol officer on West District working as a Neighborhood Resource Officer and continued on to serve neighborhoods in North District. Adams then served as both Sergeant and Lieutenant in the Public Affairs Office before being appointed to Major as the Executive Officer to the Chief of Police.

As Deputy Chief of Performance and Policy, Adams will remain focused on building stronger relationships between police and the community. Created in 2018, the Performance and Policy Division oversees accountability processes and coordinates the evaluation and update of both operational policies and training practices.
