East Lansing’s City Office Closures Extended through Friday, May 15

EAST LANSING, Mich. — In light of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s extension of the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” Executive Order to slow the spread of COVID-19, City of East Lansing offices will remain temporarily closed to the public through at least Friday, May 15, with a tentative re-opening date of Monday, May 18.

Additionally, the East Lansing City Council will be considering an extension of the City of East Lansing’s local state of emergency at a special, electronic meeting scheduled to take place this Thursday, April 30 at 9 a.m. Information on how to view and provide public comment at the meeting is available on the City of East Lansing’s new Electronic Public Meeting Notices Webpage: www.cityofeastlansing.com/ElectronicMeetings. The public meeting notice and agenda packet for the April 30 meeting will be posted to this webpage once finalized and is subject to change up to 18 hours prior to the meeting.

City offices that will remain closed to the public through at least Friday, May 15 include East Lansing City Hall, the East Lansing Department of Public Works (including the recycling drop-off site), the East Lansing 54B District Court and the East Lansing Public Library. The East Lansing Hannah Community Center and East Lansing Prime Time Seniors’ Program will be temporarily closed to the public through at least Sunday, May 31, with a tentative re-opening date of Monday, June 1. During the City’s extended office closures, essential services will continue to be maintained, including police, fire, EMS, trash and recycling collection, water services and wastewater management. East Lansing City Council and boards and commissions meetings will continue to be either canceled or held electronically as needed, so long as electronic meetings are permitted under the governor’s executive orders. Meeting details and public meeting notices for electronic meetings will continue to be posted as they are finalized at www.cityofeastlansing.com/ElectronicMeetings.

Additional reminders and updates from the City of East Lansing are below:

  • All regularly scheduled City events have been canceled or postponed through at least May 15 and some event cancellations extend beyond that date, including the East Lansing Art Festival (ELAF), Summer Solstice Jazz Festival and Recycle!   • A second round of no-fee yard waste collection will be offered on the City’s east side (homes east of Abbot Road) on Monday, May 11 and on the City’s west side (homes west of Abbot Road) on Monday, May 18. Advance requests and City yard waste bags/stickers are not required on no-fee days, but all other yard waste guidelines do apply: www.cityofeastlansing.com/yardwaste. Yard waste collection will not be offered on Monday, May 4. Additional details about this curbside collection service will be provided in a follow-up press release.
     
  • Bulk item collection will continue to be suspended while City offices are closed, with the exception of the week of Monday, May 4 to accommodate spring move-out. Additional details about this curbside collection service will be provided in a follow-up press release. 
     
  • All East Lansing Department of Parks, Recreation & Arts sports complexes, facilities, events and programming are closed/canceled through at least May 31. Further postponements, cancellations and closings are under evaluation and are expected to be announced on or before May 15. Playground equipment, outdoor sports courts, outdoor pavilions/shelters, park bathrooms and the Northern Tail Dog Park will also remain closed through at least May 31. The Northern Tier Trail and most parks remain open for physical activity (while practicing social distancing). The East Lansing Family Aquatic Center will not be open for the 2020 summer season.
     
  • Permits (new and existing) for open burning and recreational fires have been suspended. This does not include gas or charcoal grills for cooking.
     
  • Building permits/inspections will only be issued/conducted on an emergency basis and rental inspections/re-inspections have been canceled through May 15. Landlords can call (517) 319-6801 with questions.
     
  • Water service shutoffs continue to be temporarily suspended/delayed.
