Crime Alert Bulletin for the week of April 20-26, 2020

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Monday, 04-20-20 at 6:28 a.m., officers were dispatched to a residence on the 3100 block of Geneva Avenue to a report of a residential burglary. The 36-year old resident said she was in her bedroom, she heard noises coming from the front door of her residence and then heard footsteps of someone coming up the stairs. The reporting party next heard noises in the kitchen. The reporting party heard her brother say, “Who are you?” and then heard someone going down the stairs. The subject could not leave the resident, as there was a metal gate that had to be opened with a key. The subject told the resident that he would leave, and he offered to give the reporting party all the money in his wallet. The reporting party said the subject told her he came in through the backyard and had planned on taking something but said he did not steal anything. The reporting party said the subject then reached in front of his jacket and took out a machete that was in a sheath from his chest area. The subject put the machete on the floor and did not threaten anyone with it. Our officers arrived and placed the subject, a 19-year old Pacifica resident who had recently been kicked out of the house, under arrest for burglary and receiving stolen property—a purse the subject had in his hotel room at the Mylo Hotel.

On Tuesday, 04-21-20 at 8:59 a.m., Officer Andrade, Officer Hepler and Officer Jackson were dispatched to an apartment on the 100 block of Park Plaza Drive on a report of a subject bleeding from the hand and asking for help. The 27-year old victim said he got into an argument with his father after a verbal altercation. The victim said he visited his father to retrieve his property and saw his father throwing his clothing out of the apartment and onto the street. The victim and his father began to argue when the victim observed his father retrieving a kitchen knife. The victim did not believe his father would stab him, so he continued to try to make his way into the apartment. The victim said he extended his hand out, and his father stabbed him. The victim sustained a laceration to his right hand. Officers arrested the father, a 59-year old Daly City resident, for assault with a deadly weapon.
On Tuesday, 04-21-20 at 3:31 p.m., a 54-year old Walgreens (Mission Street) employee was the victim of an assault with a deadly weapon via a hit to the side of a head by a frying pan by a suspect who had stolen merchandise. The victim explained that she was working in the cosmetics area when she recognized two subjects who had stolen from the store in the past. The victim said she stood in front of the subjects as they were leaving with bags of unpaid merchandise, and one subject, described as a short Filipino male adult with tattoos on his neck, wearing a gray hoodie and blue jeans, told her he was going to hit her, and hit the victim over the head with a copper pan. The other subject was described as a short Hispanic female wearing a red hoodie. The victim said both subjects left on foot. Detective Soyangco was assigned to investigate the case and was able to identify the suspect, a 21-year old Daly City resident. Detective Soyangco arrested the subject two dates later and booked him for assault with a deadly weapon, robbery and for an outstanding warrant.

On Wednesday, 04-22-20 at 2:15 p.m., several officers were dispatched to a residence on the 900 block of Wildwood Avenue on a report of a just-occurred burglary. The reporting party called on behalf of his neighbor who ran out of her residence when three suspects broke her front door. The suspects, described as three males wearing masks, got into gray Honda and fled the area. The 45-year old Cantonese speaking victim told Detective Yip that she was home when she heard her doorbell ring. She looked out the front door and saw a suspect carrying a bag and went to her living room window and saw a vehicle in front of her driveway. The victim said she saw a subject with a hoodie over his head approaching her house. Fearing for her safety, the victim said she opened the garage door and ran to her neighbor’s house to ask for help. As she was running out of her garage, she said she heard the suspect vehicle’s horn sounding. The subjects took two Canon cameras, a watch, foreign currency, and a purse containing sunglasses, car keys, and a wallet containing identification and credit cards. This investigation is continuing.

On Wednesday, 04-22-20 at 5:54 p.m., officers were dispatched to the Mussel Rock area on a report of a vehicle that trespassed into the barricaded parking lot. The dispatcher ran the license plate provided by the reporting party, and the license plate belonged to an Acura, but the vehicle in question was a Lincoln Continental. Two subjects walked away from the vehicle, and one of the suspects, a 21-year old Daly City resident, was on probation and was subject to search by the officers. The officers found 1.75 pounds of marijuana and cash. This case will be referred to the District Attorney's Office.

Scams/Other

Stimulus Check Scam

One of our residents reported that she received a call from someone claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) who inquired about the stimulus check. The resident had not received one yet, and she gave the caller all of her personal information, including her full social security number, full routing and bank account number, date of birth, amount of monthly income, mother and father’s birth dates, home address and place of birth.

I can not remind everyone enough that the Internal Revenue Service will NOT call you! Please do not be so forthright with your personal information to someone who calls you.

Nextdoor.com

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up. I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t live there. Please note: The City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your e-mail. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
