ALERT - COVID-19 eviction moratoriums: West Hollywood residential renter & commercial tenant info

The City of West Hollywood is making every effort to respond to community needs during the coronavirus crisis and Los Angeles County Safer At Home Orders. The City of West Hollywood has released two detailed guides — one regarding the City’s temporary Residential Eviction Moratorium and the other about the City’s temporary Commercial Eviction Moratorium — in order to provide clear, concise information to renters facing financial hardship due to the impacts of the coronavirus crisis:

The City has also developed printed versions of these guides, which are currently being mailed to residential and commercial recipients.

The City of West Hollywood approved a Residential Eviction Moratorium on Monday, March 16, 2020. The City amended that Moratorium and approved a Commercial Eviction Moratorium on April 6, 2020. These moratoriums protect tenants from eviction for nonpayment of rent due to financial impact (for residential renters) and demonstrated loss of income (for commercial tenants) due to the current state of emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The moratoriums apply to nonpayment eviction notices served or filed on or after March 16, 2020 and remain in effect until May 31, 2020; the in-effect timeline may be extended as amended by the West Hollywood City Council.

The City regularly updates its Renters Resources and Small Business Resources as part of coronavirus information available on the City’s website at www.weho.org/coronavirus. At this webpage, community members can find up-to-date details about relief available during the coronavirus crisis on a variety of topics.

In addition, the City has produced two webinars with helpful information about each eviction moratorium. These webinar recordings can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5t3CTQP1K8 (Residential Eviction Moratorium) and at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4r4vRWdei6k (Commercial Eviction Moratorium). This is part of regular programming on the City of West Hollywood’s WeHoTV YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/wehotv and broadcast on Channel 10 on Spectrum in West Hollywood and on Channel 99 on AT&T U-verse throughout Southern California.

The City of West Hollywood has declared a local emergency in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak and is advising community members to adhere to Los Angeles County Safer at Home and California State Stay at Home orders, which remain in effect until May 15, 2020. The City urges everyone to stay in place, maintain your space, and cover your face. Leave home only for essential needs; always use social distancing of at least six feet; and follow guidelines to use cloth face coverings such as bandanas or scarves so that medical masks, which are in short supply, are prioritized for health professionals.

West Hollywood City Hall is currently closed to the public and has suspended all in-person transactions. All public City buildings, playgrounds, parks, and facilities are closed. City Hall will remain accessible for business and essential services with transactions to be conducted by phone (323) 848-6400 and via the City’s website at www.weho.org.
