May 2, 2020 Coronavirus update from Burr Ridge Mayor Gary Grasso.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM MAYOR GRASSO ON COVID-19 / CORONAVIRUS

Saturday, May 2, 2020

GOVERNOR ORDERS US TO STAY-AT-HOME THROUGH MAY 30

Yesterday, the IDPH reported 3,137 were positive for COVID-19, the single highest daily number, of about 14,800 persons tested. Today, was more encouraging with the IDPH reporting 2,450 have tested positive from 15,280 tested. Burr Ridge again had no additional cases reported today– we remain at 63 cumulative cases (52 DuPage/11 Cook). On April 18, there were 51 total cases reported. That means we have had only 12 additional cases in the last fourteen days. Today marks eight successive day with fewer active cases than 14 days ago in Burr Ridge.

The Tribune reported today that Governor Pritzker would consider reopening plans based on regions. That probably means central and downstate areas, except Metro East, before our area, but it means to me that he is willing to weigh the needs of areas around the state in light of the different levels of positive cases and hospital stays. I think there is real hope that the Governor will further relax his SAH Order and allow some retail shops to open around May 15. Let’s continue to hope. Even though Burr Ridge and our area has encouraging numbers, the overall numbers for the area and state are not as encouraging. Thus, social distancing, frequent hand washing with hot water and soap, and wearing face covering and masks when amongst the public are necessary. Stay the course and ensure our shared sacrifice has been for good.

I received many comments and suggestions in the last several days. Most of you want to open the economy a little more and like me question why our Burr Rudge stores cannot be just as responsible – if not more – that big box centers. Some of you understandably caution against actions that may allow a resurgence of the virus. We have to rely on the science and medicine and then weigh the risks – and how to deal with those risks as we reopen. I am confident we can figure this out.

We have 3,500 more masks for public distribution. On Monday, May 4, from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm (or until all are distributed) you can “drive thru” along the front entrance of the Village Hall and a staff member will provide four masks per car with a Burr Ridge ID address (driver’s license, or any document with your address). Residents may also take four if you walk up.
