Crime Alert Bulletin for the week of April 26-May 3

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Monday, 04-27-20 at 1:36 a.m., Officer Gill and Officer Premenko were dispatched to Callan Boulevard and Hickey Boulevard on a report of an in-progress auto burglary. The reporting party saw a subject breaking the rear passenger windows of a vehicle. Officer Premenko arrived to find the subject in the victim’s vehicle and ordered the subject to exit the vehicle. Officer Gill found a large metal pipe with a rubber handle on the passenger seat of the vehicle. The victim said the pipe did not belong to him. While Officer Gill was taking photographs of the vehicle, he was notified by other officers that there were six other vehicles in the area that were burglarized. There was a shopping cart nearby, and the cart contained items that were stolen from the other vehicles. The subject, a 19-year old Daly City resident was transported to the San Mateo County Jail, where he was denied booking by jail staff due to the COVID-19 pandemic and lack of bail enhancement. This case will be referred to the District Attorney's Office for prosecution.

On Monday, 04-27-20 at 11:51 p.m., Officer Lajoie was on patrol and heard on the police radio system that an officer from the Broadmoor Police Department was trying to stop two subjects who were leaving the City Toyota parking lot after the alarm sounded. The officer said one subject was running away and jumping over fences. Officer Dhaliwal was in the area and found one subject who was running in the parking lot of Planet Fitness. The subject that the Broadmoor officer had detained was in possession of an electric drill with a drill bit attached, gloves, and a manual socket wrench. Officer Lajoie went to City Toyota who first reported the subjects as hiding between cars and possibly tampering with them. After an investigation, one of the subjects, a 36-year old Pacifica resident, was cited for vehicle tampering.

On Wednesday, 04-29-20 at 3:36 p.m., Officer Grogan was dispatched to the unit block of Dalerose Court on a report of a suspicious vehicle. While enroute to the call, Officer Grogan was advised that an unknown person called our front desk and said his computer was stolen recently in San Francisco and that it was currently pinging on Dalerose Court. Officer Grogan contacted two subjects inside a Toyota Camry and asked them if it was okay to search the vehicle to find a computer. Both parties agreed and exited the vehicle. Officer Grogan found an Apple MacBook Pro and two Canon cameras and asked the subjects if the items were theirs. The subjects, a 38-year old male and 21-year old female both from San Francisco, told the officer that they got the items from one of their friends and insisted that Officer Grogan take the items. The owner of the MacBook Pro called the San Francisco Police Department to report the items were taken from his vehicle. This case will be referred to the District Attorney's Office for prosecution.

On Friday, 05-01-20 at 6:37 a.m., officers were dispatched to the unit block of Glenwood Drive on a report of a man who brandished two people while they were picking up garbage. The reporting parties pointed to the direction of the subject, and the officers found the subject in a carport area. The subject, a 32-year old Daly City resident, said he did not remember the garbage truck or the waste management workers. The reporting parties declined prosecution.

On Sunday, 05-03-20 at approximately 10:23 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area of 500 Hillside Boulevard on a report of three unknown males who were chasing an Asian male that had a knife. The reporting party said a male broke into his vehicle, and he was following the subject. Lt. Rolfes arrived to find the subject matching the description. Officer Chow arrived to assist, and she saw a knife on the nearby curb. The subject had disposable gloves and a window punch in his pants pocket. Officer Chow placed the subject into her patrol vehicle. The reporting party said he was returning home when he saw two male juveniles walking in the area, and he asked them if they lived on the street. The reporting party said they did not answer and began to run away, so he and his friend began chasing them. The investigation revealed three other vehicles in the area were burglarized. Officer Chow arrested the suspect, a 16-year old Daly City resident, for burglary, brandishing a pocketknife, and possession of burglary tools. He was released to the custody of his aunt, and prosecution is requested.

Scams/Other

Computer Virus Scam

On Friday, 05-01-20, Officer Haas investigated a report that was sent to us from the Adult Protective Services naming a 76-year old Daly City resident as a possible victim of elder abuse via internet fraud. An un-named Wells Fargo Bank associate saw that the victim completed a $14,600 wire transfer to a bank in China in March and flagged the transaction as suspicious. Officer Haas went to the victim’s home to investigate. The victim told the officer that her computer got a virus and a message popped up on the screen with instructions to call the phone number on the screen to have it fixed. The victim said she called the number and was routed through an automated phone tree to a person claiming to be able to repair the computer if she could provide her bank account and routing number. The victim said she gave the information, but her computer was not fixed. The victim told the officer in the following days, she received a call from a blocked number from a person claiming to work for Microsoft. The person told the victim their company accidentally deposited $14,000 into her checking account and that she needed to wire it back to them. The victim said she followed the instructions and wired the funds to “CMB Wing Lung Bank”. Within a couple of days, the initial deposit from the company disappeared, and the wire transfer she initiated had cleared, deducting $14,600 from her account. The victim said she was notified by Wells Fargo Bank that there was suspicious activity on her account and saw she was scammed.

These scammers are so convincing. Please be careful.
