Coronavirus Scams continue to take advantage of Trusting, Desperate People

The Northfield Twp Police want to keep our community members aware to protect you from such scams.

Be cautious of ads promoting products like facemasks and paper products. Many people after paying for products discovered all contact ended and no product was delivered. Before ordering from an unfamiliar online store check out ways to protect yourself from fraudulent companies: (https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0020-shopping-online)

Always pay with a credit card, as federal law protects you from payment obligations for merchandise you did not receive.

Fake testing sites are out there and look very real with tents and hazmat suits. If you believe you need to be tested find a legitimate testing site by asking your doctor for a referral, by calling the Covid-19 hotline 888-535-6136 8am--5am or by visiting the Covid-19 Test Finder (https://www.michigan.gov/coronavirus/0,9753,7-406-98189---,00.html)

Fake Marketers claim products can treat, prevent or reduce the risks of Covid-19. Currently there is no proof that any product is available to consumers that will prevent, reduce or treat the Coronavirus. Fraudulent products include listening to music CD of Frequencies, taking high doses of intravenous vitamin C, using Chinese herbs, acupuncture, teas and essential oils, ozone therapy, bioelectric shields, HEPA air purifiers, UV light therapy and Immune Defense Booster capsules.

If there is a medical breakthrough you will not hear about it through an ad on social media, or through any App.

Business opportunities claiming exaggerated earnings, emphasizing working while quarantined at home are also being marketed; Many are urging people to invest their relief stimulus payments to turn their investment into six figures.

Before you invest in a company, search on line by the name of the company and words like review, scam or complaint. Red flags should always be recognized when someone tells you to pay with gift cards, money transfers, cash or Bitcoin.

As always, do not share Social Security, bank account or credit card numbers to anyone who contacts you. Don’t fall prey, even if it looks like a government site or claims to be a government representative.

Fraudulent text messages promising money from economic impact payments or government loans for small businesses are being sent out. Delete these text messages immediately – even if they appear to be from the Executive Office of the President of the U.S.

The government is not reaching out via text, phone, email, or through social media messages. If you have questions about the federal government’s economic impact payment, visit irs.gov/coronavirus (http://www.irs.gov/coronavirus)

Finally, Be aware of fake charities – Before you donate, search online for the charity’s name and words “scam: or “fraud” and review ratings, Use one of the following organizations to help you research charities: BBB Wise Giving Alliance, Charity Navigator, CharityWatch, or GuideStar.

Double check the name of the organization. Fake charities trick you by using similar names to well known organizations. Ask lots of questions including what is the charity website, address, and mission? How do they help and how much of your donation will go to the program?

Using credit cards is the safest way to donate.

The Federal Trade Commission has been busy trying to shut down many companies making false claims – should you feel you have been a victim or suspect you have received a fraudulent solicitation; report it to ftc.gov/complaint(http://ftc.gov/complaint).

Remember: Follow the Governors’ Executive Orders- Wear your Mask -Stay Safe & Healthy.
