National Police Week

This week is National Police Week!

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15th falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. In Washington D.C., there are over 21,000 names etched on the walls at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, including some of our own heroes from the Hayward Police Department.

This week, and every day, we pay tribute to the members of the Hayward Police Department family who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our community: Sergeant Scott Lunger (EOW 07/22/15), Officer Benjamin Worcester (EOW 03/25/87), Police Assistant Robert Reed (EOW 06/29/74), Officer Bobby McSpadden (EOW 08/04/72), and Officer George Vierra (EOW 09/16/29). Their sacrifice will never be forgotten and their legacy continues to live on as we continue to remain faithful to our code of ethics, which says in part, “…my fundamental duty is to serve the community, to safeguard lives and property, to protect the innocent against deception, the weak against oppression or intimidation, and the peaceful against violence or disorder.”

We also want to celebrate our dedicated Police Officers who, even in the worst of times, continue to serve and who routinely put themselves in harm’s way for the safety of community members they may or may not know. We are lucky to have amazing people working to protect a truly amazing community!
