On this Memorial Day, different from any other we have experienced, we stop and take time to honor those who have served and who have made the ultimate sacrifice --- to defend the key values and secure the liberty upon which our Nation is built and to preserve the freedoms and the opportunities we are blessed to enjoy every day in our lives and communities.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic will surely limit the means of expressing our appreciation for those who have served throughout our history, by restricting us from celebrating with parades, public ceremonies and events, family and neighborhood barbeques and picnics, it should not keep us from expressing our deep gratitude as we pause to remember those we honor on Memorial Day. So this year we recognize their sacrifice by posting on social media, proudly flying our American flag, stopping to place flowers or notes at our local memorial sites, or simply telling a current or former service member how thankful you are for their service.

On behalf of your elected officials and our entire community, to all those who have sacrificed and dedicated their service to our great United States of America, I want to say thank you!! We look forward to returning soon to the traditional ways of remembrance, but for now, know how much we remember, value and appreciate your service. It gives us all Hope for our Nation's Future.

Remember "EAST WINDSOR TO GO". The "East Windsor To Go" program list on the Township website shows all of the food establishments that are open for meal delivery or contactless pickup at their locations. The list also identifies those that sell gift cards for purchase either online or as part of a pickup order. They make great gifts and help ensure these businesses will continue to thrive in our community and still be here for us in the future.

Positive COVID-19 cases do continue to increase in Mercer County and the State of New Jersey. In East Windsor, these past couple weeks have continued to mark the slowest increase in new cases in the last two months. On a very positive and hopeful community note, as of Sunday, May 24, 2020, a total of 519 East Windsor resident cases have recovered.

So it is even more important to continue this progress by practicing social distancing, following the advice and directives of health care professionals and government officials, and using good sense, so we can all get through this difficult period together. We need to remember that the most effective and most caring responsible thing we can continue to do for ourselves, our loved ones and our entire community is to continue to do what we are doing.

STATE OF NEW JERSEY UPDATES:

Governor Murphy issued Executive Order No. 148 on Friday, May 22, 2020, increasing the limit on outdoor gatherings from 10 to 25 people and allowing recreational campgrounds to reopen with social distancing measures in place. The limit on indoor gatherings remains at 10 people. The Order took effect immediately.
 
Outdoor Gatherings: Outdoor gatherings of up to 25 people require compliance with:
 
The gathering must take place entirely outdoors except for restroom use;

Limit capacity to no more than 25 people at all times;

Require attendees to be six feet apart at all times, excluding immediate family members, caretakers, household members, or romantic partners;

Prohibit contact between attendees, and no organized or contact sports;

If the event is an organized gathering, the organizer should demarcate six feet of spacing in the area of the gathering to demonstrate appropriate spacing for social distancing;

Limit provided seating to single individuals, spaced six feet apart, and sanitized after each use;

Prohibit sharing of any physical items provided and require sanitization before and after each use; and

Require contactless pay options wherever feasible.
 
Charter Boats and Recreational Businesses: The Order rescinds the 10-person capacity limit on charter boats and recreational businesses opened under Executive Order No. 147, including archery ranges, batting cages, golf driving ranges, horseback riding, tennis clubs, and shooting ranges, and imposes a new 25-person capacity limitation with a requirement that individuals can remain six feet apart at all times.
 
Parks, Beaches, Boardwalks, and Lakeshores: The Order allows gatherings of no more than 25 people at State Parks and Forests, county and municipal parks, public and private beaches, boardwalks, lakes, and lakeshores, but continues to prohibit special events such as festivals, concerts, fireworks, and movies.
 
Recreational Campgrounds: The Order permits private and public recreational campgrounds to reopen to the public. The following shall remain closed at recreational campgrounds: picnic areas; playgrounds; pavilions; and other buildings amenities, or facilities, except restrooms and showers. Recreational campgrounds that are open to the public must comply with the same restrictions required for recreational businesses. The Department of Environmental Protection is required to prepare a phased-in reopening plan for all campgrounds located on State Parks and Forests within fifteen days.
 
The Order also recommends, but does not order, that people wear a face covering while at outdoor gatherings and recreational campgrounds when social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.
 
Mercer County has reported, as of May 24, 2020, there have been 62 new cases for a total of 6,413 Confirmed COVID-19 Cases to date, and 2 additional deaths for a total, sadly, of 449 deaths in Mercer County. All active cases are either at home self-isolating or admitted to the hospital. The State of New Jersey today reported 1,050 additional Confirmed COVID-19 Cases for a current total of 154,154 cases, and 52 additional deaths for a total of 11,133 COVID-19 related deaths statewide.
