Crime Alert Bulletin for May 18-25, 2020

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Tuesday, 05-19-20 at 3:58 a.m., subsequent to a traffic stop by Officer Lajoie at Junipero Serra Boulevard and Colma Boulevard, the passenger, a 23-year old South San Francisco resident, was cited for being a prohibited person carrying a firearm and carrying a firearm—not the registered owner and without a serial number, carrying a firearm in a public place and possession of a high capacity magazine. The driver, a 23-year old Pacifica resident, was cited for driving without a license.

On Friday, 05-23-20 at 12:30 p.m., Officer Chittenden was driving to the Walgreen’s store at the Westlake Shopping Center when he saw a subject who was standing outside of a black pickup truck, frantically throwing shampoo bottles into the open passenger side window. A passerby flagged down the officer and said, “That’s them, those are the guys!” Officer Chittenden asked if they stole something, and the passerby said yes. At that time, the Walgreen’s store manager came out and told the officer to stop the subjects, as they just stole from him and were driving out of the parking lot. Officer Chittenden was able to catch up to the vehicle and told the driver he needed the stolen items returned and asked where the other subject was. The driver said he didn’t know, and the officer told him to roll down the backseat window where he saw a subject hiding. Officer Chittenden later arrested and cited that subject, a 26-year old San Francisco resident, for possession of a concealed dirk/dagger, shoplifting and possession of drug paraphernalia.

On Saturday, 05-23-20 at 9:16 a.m., Officer Haas was dispatched to the front parking lot of the police station to speak with someone who was having an issue with her adult son who lives with her. The 67-year old reporting party/victim said she and her two adult sons live in loft on the 500 block of King Drive, and she has been having an ongoing issue with her 32-year old son using heroin and other street drugs, and was afraid he was going to influence her 25-year old son. The victim told the officer that she suffers from leg and abdominal pain stemming from several hip replacements and issues with her spleen and pancreas. She said she woke up to use the bathroom at 4:55 a.m. and passed by her son’s room and saw that he was watching pornography on his cellphone. The victim said she didn’t approve of it and confronted her son. The victim said her son got upset and punched her in the stomach. The victim tried walking down the stairs but heard her son getting out of bed, so she sat on the stairs because she thought he was going to push her down the stairs. The victim said, instead, her son came up behind her, wrapped his arm around her in a “choke hold” and squeezed. The victim said her other son came to intervene. The victim went downstairs, and her older son followed her, grabbed a shoe and threw it at her. The victim said her other son got her a glass of water, and as she was drinking it, she said her older son slapped the glass out of her hand. The victim said she went to get her phone off the table to call the police, but her son grabbed it off the table and threw it at a mirror, breaking the phone and the mirror. Officer Haas and other officers went to the victim’s apartment and found the subject hiding behind a laundry basket and a pile of dirty clothes. They arrested the subject for elder abuse, assault with a deadly weapon, vandalism, and resisting/obstructing a peace officer. The victim refused medical aid, and an emergency protective order against her son was issued. This case will also be forwarded to Adult Protective Services.

Robberies

There were two robberies and one attempted robbery during the past week.

On Monday, 05-18-20 at 7:07 p.m., Officer Reininger and Officer Arguelles were dispatched to the Target store at Westlake Shopping Center on a report of a robbery with a knife. The dispatcher gave a description of the subject, and the officers saw a subject matching the description at Park Plaza Drive and South Mayfair Avenue. The officers requested that incoming officers set up a perimeter of the subject, and Officer Graner, with officers from the Broadmoor Police Department, found the subject. The reporting party, a Security Team Leader at Target, said he was monitoring the surveillance cameras and saw a subject whom he recognized from previous thefts at Target begin to conceal items inside a black duffel bag. The reporting party said he waited for the subject to descend the escalator and confronted the subject for concealing the items. The reporting party said the subject began to argue with him and reached his hand in his waist band under his jacket and threatened to pull out a knife. The reporting party feared for his personal safety, let the subject leave the store and called the police. The officers arrested the subject, a 25-year old Pittsburg resident, for robbery, possession of a controlled substance and possession of controlled substance paraphernalia.

On Sunday, 05-24-20 at 6:44 p.m., Officer Farrar, Officer Kett and Officer Haas were dispatched to the CVS store on Pierce Street a report of an alarm. The dispatchers advised that one of the employees was fighting with a shoplifter. The employee tried to stop a subject from stealing, and the subject brandished him with a metal wine opener and punched him twice in the face. The 22-year old clerk described both suspects as black males between 35-40 years old, 5’6-5’8, and wearing dark clothing. The clerk said the suspect who hit him wore a “Kangol” brand hat. The subjects left the store with approximately $400 worth of alcohol. The subjects left before the officers arrived at the store.

On Wednesday, 05-19-20 at approximately 2:24 p.m., a 41-year old Daly City resident was the victim of an attempted robbery and conspiracy by a traveling Romanian gold theft scam. This occurred near the intersection of Lakeshire Drive and Lincoln Avenue. The victim said he was smoking a cigarette outside of his car when a gray SUV drove up to him and a subject asked him for directions. The victim said a woman exited the rear passenger seat of the vehicle and offered to give him a ring. The woman said she was from India and Pakistan, which confused the victim. The victim declined the ring, and he said the woman offered to give him a necklace free of charge. The victim refused the woman’s offer and said the woman then raised her hands above his head, as if she was planning to put the chain around his neck. The victim said he got scared and said, “Don’t touch me.” The victim said the suspect persisted and told him the necklace was free. The victim said he suspected the woman saw the necklace he was wearing and thought the woman may be trying to steal it by distracting him. The victim told the woman again that he did not want the necklace and said the woman got back into the vehicle, and it went south on Lakeshire Drive. This investigation is continuing.
