MESSAGE FROM POLICE CHIEF ALLAN SHIELDS

Hello All,

I am happy to see people in our community come up with creative solutions to enjoy life as the Health Department eases the restrictions of the Shelter in Place.  Over the past few weeks, we have seen several vehicle-based activities informally put on by community members.  I am very appreciative of the sense of community brought on by these events.  However, I would like to ask everyone to please help make sure we are safe in doing so and following the rules of the road while driving on the public roadways.

In some instances, we have seen people riding in the backs of trucks and hanging out of sunroofs.  I can appreciate the sentiment of trying to make special events for those in our community, but travelling in a vehicle on an open public road without a seatbelt is hazardous on its own, but doing so while hanging out of the sunroof or while standing in the back of a truck is both hazardous and illegal.

Some residents have likened the informal vehicle-based activities to formal parades in Town like the 4th of July Parade that has taken place for decades in Town.  Formal events sponsored by the Town require Town Council approval, take place on roads closed to the public, require insurance, and are only held after months of extensive planning for the safety of the event.

While I am happy to see our community making the most of a trying time, I fear seeing a disastrous event arising from failing to take general safety precautions while driving on our public roadways. I am asking everyone who participates in a vehicle-based activity to please demonstrate proper safety habits, follow the rules of the road, and stay safe this summer season.

Thank you!

Danville Police Chief Allan Shields
