North Mankato and Mankato Declare Curfew May 30 and May 31 from 8 pm to 6 am each day
North Mankato, Minn. On Saturday, May 30, 2020, at 2:00 pm the City of Mankato and the City of North Mankato held a joint press conference declaring a curfew for both jurisdictions. At 3:00 pm, Friday, May 29, an organized rally and demonstration began on the Veterans Memorial Bridge. Another demonstration began in Riverfront Park, 309 West Rock Street, Mankato around 4:30 pm, and members from both groups made their way to the Public Safety Center, 710 South Front Street.
The demonstrations were peaceful throughout most of the day. Destructive behavior was later demonstrated by a small group of people, and damage occurred at the Mankato Public Safety Center, 710 South Front Street; Target, 1850 Adams Street; and T-mobile, 201 Sioux Road. By 1:30 am, people in the area had dispersed.
We respect people's rights to peacefully demonstrate. Our goal is to ensure safety of demonstrators, North Mankato residents, visitors, businesses and staff.
The City of North Mankato, in cooperation with the City of Mankato, has established a night-time curfew in all public places within both jurisdictions effective May 30 and May 31 from 8 pm to 6 am each day.
During the curfew:
- No travel--includes pedestrians, bicyclists, motor vehicles, public transit, or items such as skateboards.
- Exemptions include all law enforcement, fire, and medical personnel, members of the news media, and other personally authorized by the cities of Mankato and North Mankato, Minnesota Department of Public Safety and Minnesota State Patrol.
- Other exemptions include individuals traveling directly to and from work, seeking emergency care, fleeing danger, or experiencing homelessness.
Instructions:
No travel between 8pm and 6am effective May 30 and May 31.
