Message to the Emeryville Community
The incident in which George Floyd was restrained and killed by an officer from the Minneapolis Police Department is deeply disturbing. I expect our officers, myself included, to apply the law in a way that prioritizes and respects the sanctity of life. We recognize the remarkable challenges our country is facing right now and assure you Emeryville Police Department is committed to protecting and serving with the professionalism and respect you are accustomed to.
The protests in Oakland last night evolved into acts of violence and vandalism. We are working with our neighboring agencies to ensure we are ready to respond and protect Emeryville and maintain the safety of our community members.
We ask for your help in keeping everyone safe during these challenging times. Please continue to abide by the ‘Shelter in Place’ order so that you are protected from any potentially harmful activity that may occur this weekend.
The Emeryville Police Department partners with community groups and leaders to ensure that we continue to be a trusted, learning organization. It is our culture. These relationships have allowed us to have meaningful conversations with groups who have experienced difficult experiences with law enforcement in the past. They have also enhanced our ability to provide training for our officers on important topics such as principled policing and implicit bias, and to engage local community members to participate in that training.
Rest assured, we as sworn officers, are granted the authority to protect our community. We understand that we must do so with a blend of humanity, empathy, and fairness to maintain our public’s trust.
Be safe, be well,
Jennifer G. Tejada Chief of Police
