Crime Alert Bulletin for the week of May 25-31, 2020

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Monday, 05-25-20 at 3:58 p.m., Officer Arguelles was on patrol and saw a subject who appeared to be sleeping in the middle of the sidewalk on the 6200 block of Mission Street. Officer Arguelles tapped the subject on his shoulder to wake him up and asked if he needed medical assistance. The subject said he had “just smoked weed and passed out”. The dispatcher advised that the subject, a 37-year old San Francisco resident, had a warrant from the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office. Officer Arguelles asked the subject if he had anything illegal in his possession, and the subject said he did not and consented to the officer searching the him. Officer Arguelles found a folded-up foil wrapper containing a white rock-powdery substance in the subject’s pocket. The subject told the officer it was fentanyl. Officer Arguelles cited the subject for possession of a controlled substance.

On Wednesday, 05-27-20 at 3:00 a.m., Sergeant Tone was on patrol at the “Top of the Hill” area when a Honda in front of him suddenly hit his brakes and made an abrupt illegal left turn. Sergeant Tone effected a traffic stop of the vehicle and asked the subject where he was heading. The subject said he was on his way to the Excelsior area in San Francisco. Sergeant Tone asked the subject if he was on probation or parole, and the subject admitted to being on parole for a murder charge that was reduced to manslaughter. Officers Lajoie and Wagnon arrived to assist Sergeant Tone. After the subject exited the vehicle, the officers discovered the fascia to the steering column was removed, and a shaved General Motors key was jammed into the ignition. The subject said he had just purchased the vehicle but could not provide any paperwork or the former owner’s name. Officer Wagnon contacted the registered owner who lived within a mile of the stop who owner confirmed the vehicle was not where he parked it, and he did not give anyone permission to drive the vehicle. Sergeant Tone saw a backpack on the front passenger seat of the Honda and asked the subject if it was his. The subject said it was, and Sergeant Tone found a cordless grinder, crowbar, a leather fold containing keys, an eyeglass case containing a white crystal-like substance suspected to be methamphetamine, and two glass pipes inside the backpack. Sergeant Tone placed the subject, a 45-year old San Francisco resident, under arrest.

On Wednesday, 05-27-20 at 4:13 a.m., Officer Moody and Officer Dhaliwal were dispatched to the intersection of Highway 35 and John Daly Boulevard on a report of a male subject dancing in the middle of the intersection. The officers arrived and found the subject dancing and waving around a knife. They were able to pull him out of the intersection and placed the subject, a 64-year old San Jose resident, on a 72-hour hold for a psychiatric evaluation.

On Wednesday, 05-27-20 at 11:45 a.m., Officer Andrade was assigned to investigate a possible illegal dumping on the 100 block of Serra Vista Avenue, after someone posted a photo of the suspect and his vehicle on Facebook. Officer Andrade contacted the registered owner at her home in Daly City and showed her the photo. The owner told the officer she loaned her vehicle to her brother and his wife. Officer Andrade spoke to the subject over the phone, and the subject said he dumped items after he cleaned his garage and thought someone would pick up the headboard and take it home. Officer Andrade cited the 31-year old Daly City resident for illegal dumping.

On Friday, 05-29-20 at 11:07 a.m., Officer Haas was dispatched to a residence on the 1300 block of South Mayfair Avenue on a report of a male subject with a baseball bat harassing a neighbor. The reporting party said the subject with the bat “hit things” and drove off in a gray Honda Civic with an out- of-state license plate. Officer Haas arrived and saw that a screen to a lower window was ripped off and that the window frame had a large piece broken off it. The victim told the officer that a friend he had previously dated had stayed the night. In the morning, they heard a male voice from outside the closed bedroom who was yelling his friend’s name. The friend told him it was his ex-boyfriend and hid in the corner of the room because she was afraid. The 23-year old victim said he could see a man looking through his bedroom window and started banging on the window with his fist. The victim said the male threatened to beat him. The victim said the subject lunged at the window, punched the screen, ripped it off and pulled out a metal baseball bat and started swinging it at him. The female, a 19-year old Livermore resident, got between them and said she would leave and willingly left with the subject after she crawled out of the window. A neighbor provided video to the officer, and the officer was able to obtain the license plate. The officer left several messages with the subject, and he offered to come to the Police Department to speak with him. Officer Haas subsequently arrested the subject, a 23-year old Oakland resident, for assault with a deadly weapon, attempted residential burglary and vandalism. The female said she was not a victim of domestic violence.

Robberies

There was one robbery during the past week.

On Saturday, the manager at the 7-11 fuel station on Bayshore Boulevard was stocking cigarettes on the shelves and placed a box of cigarettes on the pavement next to the rear door. As the manager retrieved a box, she said it slipped from her grip and fell to the ground. As she reached down to pick it up, a bystander reached down, picked up the box, handed it to her and then went to his white Acura that was parked on MacDonald Avenue. The manager said she continued stocking shelves and noticed the same vehicle enter the parking lot and pull along to where she was stocking the shelves. She said the same subject got out of his vehicle, reached down to pick up the box of cigarettes and proceeded back to the passenger side door of the vehicle. The manager said she grabbed the subject’s shirt as he was entering the vehicle and told him to drop the box. The 48-year old manager said the subject pulled away from her and got in the front passenger seat. During the incident, the manager said the driver of the vehicle exited the vehicle and attempted to steal a second box of cigarettes but changed his mind. The manager grabbed onto the passenger door frame of the vehicle as the suspects fled away from the gas station. The manager lost her grip and fell to the ground. The victim described the two suspects as both being African American males between 45-50 years old. This investigation is continuing.

Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up. I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t live there.
